[MR2] Stuck Piston Rings

I heard of that happening to a (then new) MB 560SEL. With a V8.

Engine was pretty expensive to replace (like the BMW) and the factory wasn't
too sympathetic about a warranty claim (as they shouldn't have been).

Tell you something else interesting about driving though fairly high (1
foot) water

Years ago I drove my 300E in similar water - we were having a lot of rain -
the storm drains clog with leaves -

I had read somewhere about differentials having a vent at the top
(transmissions too for that matter) and you should avoid the driving that I
just described.

Well after the rain I took it to my shop and the shop owner wanted to
reassure me that I "didn't have anything to worry about"

I kept insisting that he drain both the differential and transmission and
finally to humor me - he did.

Well when he opened the drain plug on the diff this milky white glop started
pouring out and when that was done just a bit of pure water.

The transmission also had a bit of water in it.

At the time the car was fairly new so I figured I saved 1000s (now my parts
can - if necessary - come from Pick & Pull ;-) )

Anyway I am sure that our 2s also have that vent and I know mine has a
"reverse snorkel" from the air cleaner that goes DOWN the car - better to
suck up water? ;-)

I am sure that to get water in the engine from a foot of water it would be
hard but with perseverance it can be done ;-)
