what i don't understand is the Toyota & Subaru joint? What's up with all
these duped cars?

That was back when the good old us dollar bought 200 yen. Today it buys
about 75 yen. A 1991 mr2 today would be $50,000.
Actually what is more exiting to me is the idea of a nice $10,000 used turbo
mr2 + a $15,000 fun budget.
