Did you leave the capacitors in or replace with larger capacitors?  If 
you like heavy bass, those MkI speakers can blow.  It's been a while, 
but I seem to remember that about 100uf was where I couldn't detect any 
difference in the sound, yet it reduced the travel of the cone 
significantly.

What you have may survive, but what I could find that would fit in the 
MkI would blow w/o protection.
