When I had a leakage problem I pressurized the system with a bicycle
pump through the heater bleed. Had the advantage likewise of testing
the cap and pressurizing the system to the actual running pressure
(which was necessary, since it only leaked under pressure).
Short answer: I see no reason why your solution isn't an excellent
solution.
I also bought one of the Harbor Freight testers. It's still shrink
wrapped so I can't say if it has the right MR2 adapter. It was on sale
cheap enough that I bought in preparation for the next time I have a
cooling system problem.
