Worn brushes could easily be the culprit, although these cars are at an
age where the brushes may not be the only worn part in the alternator.
Still, if you can find some cover to work under, it's easy enough to
take a look and ascertain the condition of both brushes and commutator
before making a decision.

Hi guys. Fired up my 88 this aft and all was fine - no alt light, full
voltage - until a few miles later when I backed into a slot and again
the volts dropped and the light came on, stayed on during the rest of my
errands. Would funky brushes explain this or...... ? Cold pouring rain
the last couple of days has prevented a thorough going over, but nothing
seemed loose. And don't tell me to stop backing up, only move forward,
