[MR2] Shell from hell

Yup, a very loud bell. And a very specific and very clear memory.
The one time I had a Mk I alternator go bad was on a trip from Orlando down
to Boca, with the cruise on. About halfway back, the cruise failed. Quick
grab for the gas pedal, tried the cruise button, then about 5secs later the
alternator light came on. Dead alternator. Ended up pulling one headlight
fuse, so that the battery would make it back home.
So, my memory is... when the cruise stops working, you have about 5-10sec of
alternator life left. :)

Subject: [MR2] Shell from hell
Hi guys. Had a fun trip up to Lime Rock and back in my 88 mk1. Ran like a
clock as usual until 30 miles from home when I stopped at a Shell to refill.
First the pump wouldn't read my card, then when I refired and backed up to
go to another pump the alt light came on and the voltage dropped, so I'm
guessing the newish alt died. The cruise stopped working too, tho the light
on the stalk was green. Got home on battery power. Ring any bells? TIA,
Ron.
