[MR2] Stuck engine compartment hatch

My cable is in good shape, including the ball end. It pulled off the lever
(which I will have to fix later), but the ball head is solid. In fact I
tried pulling it with a pair of vise grips, one on the cable ball-end &
other on the cable housing - the cable moves freely for a couple of mm 'til
it hits the resistance which can only be from the frozen latch. Recall that
I had replaced the cable a few years back.
I will remove the trunk lining and see if that improves access.
Thanks for the tips, Donald.

Note the pressed on lead ball on the end of the release cable. A common
failure mode when pulling on the cable too hard is the cable pulling out of
the ball. I do seem to recall the latch mechanism access through the trunk
(with the trunk gasket and trunk firewall liner removed) holes being
sufficient to spray penetrating oil with a tube nozzle and manipulate the
mechanism with a screwdriver. Hope's 88 OPM (Zippy) which was flooded in
Atlanta in 03 was frozen up and seems like the man with the warehouse full
of MR2s who I ended up giving Zippy to (07?) had that issue as well as a
bucket load of others.
I say if all else fails Bob (the salt from your oceanfront property making
the corrosion just too much), you can drill the out the bolts holding the
hood latch mechanism from the trunk and replace after.
