[MR2] Emissions problem

zach,
if i'm not mistaken, that boils down to unburnt fuel. if it were NOx,
that is caused by higher than normal cylinder temperature.
start off with the simplest things first.
spark plugs:
remove and inspect them. if in doubt, replace them with factory Denso
plugs.
spark plug wires:
inspect them at the same time that you are inspecting the spark plugs.
if they look damaged, replace them with NGK or factory wires.
distributor cap and rotor:
remove the distributor cap and inspect it and the rotor. if the rotor
looks damaged or scorched, replace it with a factory part. if the
contacts inside the cap looked like they're worn or scorched, replace it
with a factory part.
engine timing:
if you can, check the timing of the engine. if you do not have the
tool/knowledge, take it to a trusted mechanic and have them check the
timing - it should be a very simple and inexpensive matter.
other than that, i am UNCERTAIN if the catalytic converter might be a
realistic possibility...
the factory 5SFE engine is reliable, though no power house. it should
serve you very well for basic driving with no real problems. but, like
any engine, it does have its own 'quirks' and requires basic maintenance.
i'm sure that someone more versed than myself will chime in as well. :)
