Jim, our dealership (Lithia Toyota of Springfield [OR]) sponsors both
mr2.com and mr2oc.com as well as celicatech.com, and we have four MR2s
in the parts department. Naturally you get a strong discount from us,
and we have a website at www.LithiaToyotaParts.com where you can price
things out and place orders - just be aware that it is preferable to
search and order by part number wherever possible, and *not advisable*
to look things up by application on our website. Part numbers are
gospel. I can help with part numbers any time, and/or you can usually
get a strong head start by searching the forums for part numbers. There
are thousands of them out there. Our sponsor section at www.mr2.com has
become a pretty deep archive of part numbers and general OEM info and is
a very good place to start your research if you're in the preliminary
stage of roughing things out.

Some notes, for whatever they're worth:

Toyota doesn't do lower (conversion) gasket sets. You can get a valve
grind gasket set (a.k.a. head gasket set) but if you're doing the whole
engine, you'll want an engine overhaul gasket set. This is 04111-74240
for your '91. It does not include an oil pump shaft seal or o-ring
(15165-88382 & 15188-03011) nor fuel injector o-rings (90301-14006 &
90301-17007, four each) or insulators (26291-75010, eight req'd) which
you'll need if you are not sending your injectors off to Witchhunter for
cleaning. And you'll want a tube of FIPG sealant (00295-00103) for the
oil pan and the corners of the valve cover gaskets.

OEM pistons and rings are costly enough for this engine that it is a
very small jump to aftermarket forged units. There is seldom a reason
to replace the connecting rods with new OEM rods - do you have damage,
or do you plan to upgrade to aftermarket rods?

Re: steel head gasket - Toyota's US supply chain has finally run out of
the TRD MLS head gasket. There are alternatives available through the
performance MR2 suppliers/builders or, if you have your heart set on the
TRD piece, we can probably source it for you. The catch is that with
most TRD Japan parts, there's a four month wait time.

The timing belt issue comes up often enough that we made it a sticky in
our vendor section at mr2.com. There is no "kit", in typical Toyota
fashion, but there are enough different parts associated with the job
that some clarification is required. The sticky also mentions
tensioner, idlers, water pump, HFH/HFHOE and oil cooler, etc, and
warrants a read:
http://www.mr2.com/forums/lithia-toyota-springfield/Toyota-MR2-51201-sea
rch-first-gen2-turbo-timing-belt-job-suggestions.html

Of course, if you take the engine to a machine shop, they may want to
provide their own parts. If they're well experienced with this engine,
they'll know (in theory) what's OK and what isn't. If they are not,
they may want to use the same "service replacement" (sub-OEM grade)
parts they use on their other builds, and that's another discussion
altogether.

I'm starting to rebuild my engine in earnest. I want to get the car on
the road for spring!

Whats the current Fav vendor (good prices) in the community for OEM MR2
Parts?

I'm in the market for upper & lower gasket sets, Pistons, Rods, Timing
Belt Kit, HFH (and all the others), Steel Head Gasket, and a million
other things Im forgetting right now..

Also thinking about dumping all my solo computers (GForce, SAFC, AVCR,
J&S, VPC) and going for an Apexi or HKS. Comments?

Thanks,

-Jim Smith
