[MR2] Dash lights flash

It broke... Heck, this was 1989, I don't remember last week let alone 20
years ago.
One of the OEM units froze up. The aftermarket ones just set off the lights
and I changed them with the free warrantee units without even testing them
I could wiggle the units out the top and I was down to something like 45
minutes start to finish after a while.

What was the nature of the failure? I had a car with a factory misalignment
of the crank, idler and alternator pulley and it ate alternators until the
dealer got tired of putting on new and put on a new idler bracket. It was
sorta of fun as I'd pointed out the misalignment the first time I took it
back for the grinding noises and the service manager pooh poohed the idea.
Second time, all the service department looked at it and twisted their toes
but no mech wanted to say anything. Third time was the charm.

:I bought my 86 in 1987 and the first one failed around 50,000 miles.
: At the time there was no such thing as a rebuild so I ended up at the
dealer
: paying a fortune for a new one. That one failed 2 years later and I
started
: putting on lifetime guaranteed rebuilds. In the 10 years I owned the car
I
: went through a lifetime guaranteed rebuilt alternator 2 more times.
:
: I know the rebuilds aren't worth much but given that 2 oem units failed
: before 100,000 miles, well that isn't normal Toyota quality.

: Huh? Likely just the brushes are worn out...hardly seems a quality issue,
: unless they wore out at 50k or something.
