Bob - your experience is most unusual if you have been putting in Toyota- rebuilt units. I have had trouble with every other :rebuild" including Nippondenso, who won't change the bearings "unless it is necessary".

I am on my 2nd Toyota rebuild in 275,000 miles.

I bought my 86 in 1987 and the first one failed around 50,000 miles.
At the time there was no such thing as a rebuild so I ended up at the dealer paying a fortune for a new one. That one failed
2 years later and I started putting on lifetime guaranteed rebuilds. In the 10 years I owned the car I went through a
lifetime guaranteed rebuilt alternator 2 more times.

I know the rebuilds aren't worth much but given that 2 oem units failed before 100,000 miles, well that isn't normal Toyota
quality.
