You should really get a copy of the BGB (Big Green Book, AKA
Repair manual).
Shimming requires some special tools including a micrometer for
measuring the existing shims. Not too expensive, but pretty
much impossible w/o the tools or a DIY mimic of the tools.
The longer you keep your car the more valuable having that
BGB will be.
Now having said that, my MKI has 150K miles on it with the
original factory shims. Valve clearances are still in
spec, barely.
