Johnson Controls makes the batteries for Costco, or at least they did
when I bought one last year. I had one of their starting batteries last
over eight years in normal usage.

It was a Kragen lifetime alternator. I suppose it also has about 120K miles. I figure that isn't a bad thing. Of course the MK1 NA is the easiest alternator to replace. The MK1 SC is a pain, much worse than the MK2 turbo. I have no experience with a MK2 NA so can't comment on that car. Also the MK1 SC is a very difficult alternator to find an aftermarket replacement. I would highly recommend the OEM for that car.
