If the starter can turn the engine, likely nothing serious is wrong with
the crank or rods. But FWIW, I once broke a crank at low speed (reground crank
with a sharp step on all the journals- textbook stress-riser). The engine
would still run at idle- with the scariest knock you ever heard. And
1st gen ZR 1 Chevs used to partially sieze their cams in the aluminum heads
due to a restricted oil supply.
My 1st move would be to drop the oil pan and verify the rotating parts are
still OK. After that (and a relaxing beer or 2), I would continue what
you're doing- checking peripheral driven parts for partial seizures or broken
