My understanding is that the tach is run off of the pickups in the
distributor. I don't have a BGB for the 1st gen anymore, but that's how I
remember it.

Something I forgot to add, the tach does not move while cranking.  It
is my understanding that the tach is driven of a signal from the
igniter.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?
