[MR2] Toyota's Head Gasket Problem

It's difficult to see.  The best way I found to identify it was to spray brake clean on the side of the head/block interface that faces the driver side and let it dry.  This cleans up the interface really well (between the distributor and the exhaust, more or less under where the EGR tube bolts into the head).  If you then start the car and shine a flashlight in there, you will see a small river of oil cruise across the head/block interface (there is a slight ledge there) on its way to the rear of the car.  This oil is coming from the failed oil ring and it leaks out right under the #4 exhaust port (impossible to see there).

Dave,

Are/were you able to see the place these were leaking, or is it hidden by other parts?

<Incidentally, I've also had two blown 3SGTE head gaskets - different problem. These tend to blow around the #4 oil jacket copper ring causing oil to seep out between the block and the head.>

Thanks.

Thon
