[MR2] Car theft in Phoenix AZ - would you take a low mileage MR2 SCdown there?

I know, we all think that the Mr2's are the best car ever but I can't see
them worth much to a thief. It would be a great joy ride car but as long as
the car didn't have the keys in the ignition, it should be safe from that.
There are lots of $1500 Mr2's on Craigs List, not that yours isn't worth a
bunch more but really, it isn't like there is a lot of kids building up
these cars anymore. I would be a lot more worried if you had a Civic or an
Eclipse.
I am surprised that your car didn't have the factory alarm; almost all of my
loaded Mk1's had it. If you're worried, put on an alarm, the remote for the
power locks would be nice.
I wouldn't be concerned that your cutting up a nice car, do it tastefully
and no one will ever know.

Subject: [MR2] Car theft in Phoenix AZ - would you take a low mileage MR2
SCdown there?
Later this month I'm going to be starting a six month contract gig in
Phoenix, AZ. I'll need a car while I'm down there, so I was planning to
drive down one of my MR2s. Specifically, I've been planning to drive down
my nearly perfect, totally stock 1989 MR2 SC with only 31,000 miles on the
clock. It was my first choice because primarily because the air
conditioning works perfectly (as does everything else on this car).
But while looking for a place to stay, I ran across all sorts of information
telling me that Phoenix has a high crime rate and a big problem with car
theft. Now I'm waffling. I'd be upset if the car were stolen, since it
would not be easy to replace. BUT: I don't want to alter the car in any
way... including by putting in an alarm system.
For any of you in or near Glendale and Phoenix:
- Should I be concerned?
- Would I be foolish to keep an alarm-free MR2 SC down there?
- Do I need air conditioning in AZ October - March?
Thanks,
