I went through this many years ago with a VW bug. There was no crank
damage except for the throw where the bearing halves welded themselves.
The solution was to grind the crank and use under sized bearings. The
crank end of the offending rod was closed up by grinding the end caps
and then re-boring it. On the higher revving MR2, getting a new rod
is probably advised since the re-boring trick lightens the rod.
