[MR2] MK1 Cooling System Problem

Bob,
I made a quick pressure check and found the cooling system was fine. I pumped up the pressure to about 15 lbs and it held for more than one hour. I figure that the problem must be the radiator cap.

What kind of pressure tester do you have?
My Stant kit came with an adapter to pressure test the caps.
It found the problem cap on my Transport…
The car still seems to run hotter than I would like though.

I also have not had any luck with none OEM thermostats. Only the OEM thermostat works in the MR2, at least from my experience. My none OEM radiator cap had been working fine for several years until this problem appeared.

The OEM cap would be a good investment.
Aftermarket seem to work ok with American Cars but I had a Prizm that required an OEM thermostat and Radiator cap… it took me quite some time to figure that one out.

One test I will do is to perform a pressure test when the system is cool. If that passes then I will get a new OEM cap. .

Your Radiator cap could still be the problem... I have had a bunch of
defective even brand name caps.
If it isn't the cap, check out the sealing area on the filler neck, a chip
there (and I have seen it) will prevent the cap from sealing.
If that doesn't seem to be a problem, then you have a leak in the system
somewhere... it may be a small one but it is preventing the system from
going into a vacuum when it cools down.
Get a cooling system pressure tester. You might be able to borrow one from
AutoZone, they do have a tool loan program. If not try the other big
boxes... This is about the only way to find a leak and it is possible that
you have a small leak and it is enough to prevent a seal but not enough to
really leave a puddle.

This problem just started. First I am not loosing any coolant nor is my
engine over heating. The problem is that the cooling system does not suck
the coolant back into the system when it cools down.
I have changed the radiator cap. I have also checked to make sure that the
tube going between the overflow tank and the system is not plugged. I can
pull coolant from the over flow tank with a vacuum. Things seem to be very
normal except for this problem. When the system has cooled down I can remove
the radiator cap and don't see coolant. I can manually recover the coolant
from the over flow tank into the system and see that the total amount
remains the same.
Anybody have an experience like this?
Dennis
