Air bags have been proven to save lives. Period. That doesn't mean there
aren't problems with them. I believe the European market uses airbags that
deploy less violently, and this addresses the problem that Jeff has
troubles with. Chris King states: "I will take a bloody nose and burnt
cheeks over a 2 piece head any day..."
I have to say that I agree with Chris. At one time wanted to take off my
airbagged steering wheel. I was told that if a mechanic did it, he would
be liable for a $10,000 fine, so I would be on my own. I would have still
considered doing it, but only if I had a full racing harness installed on
the car, and to do that properly, that involved changing the seats, and
losing the convenient storage area for my T-tops. Well, if you know me,
that was a no-brainer, as I always need a storage place for my tops (since
I have them off at any given time through the year), and need the trunk
space for other things. I still have the OEM airbagged steering wheel, and
finally sold my Momo steering wheel that I had originally installed in my
MKI to someone who could make better use of it than me (Aly Abulkheir). If
anyone doesn't think that airbags save lives, try hanging around a
hospital's trauma unit (emergency room) for a while. What truly scares me,
though, is unintentional deployment. I believe GM, for example just
recalled a bunch of Caddy's where this phenomenom has been reported and
documented.
