Gail,

The Toyota 22R and 22RE do have one problem. The later addition engines have a plastic timing chain guide. After about 100K miles you will find that this plastic guide will break. After that happens the timing chain will flop around for a while. I have seen this account for some wear in the aluminum housing where there are coolant passages.

>From what I was told Toyota changed the guide from metal to plastic around 1983. My '83 had the plastic guide and all of the problems. I was suspicious when I had removed the oil pan to patch up an oil leak. When I removed the pan I found plastic parts in the bottom of the pan.

I purchased a replacement timing chain kit from Beck Arneley. This kit had a metal timing chain guide.

Just a thought. I know the 22R and 22RE are very reliable engines except for this one problem. While the problem with my engine did not cause a coolant leak I have heard this can happen after the guide breaks down.
