[MR2] strange starting problem

hey folks

i'm only starting to figure out this starting problem that i have ... apparently, the car only starts after the "check engine" light comes on. when i dont start the car for a few days, the "check engine" light goes away and i have to keep trying to start the car (sometimes for as long as 10 min) before the check engine light comes on, but when it does, the engine starts up right away.

connecting the e1/tc diagnostic ports, i'm unable to get the "check engine" light to blink ... BUT 3 other lights on the dash blink! the abs, cruise and the seatbelt (or perhaps its the light next to the seatbelt).

i can't seem to find this in the factory manual ... any ideas whats wrong?
