[MR2] Sudden rise in temperature

Sunday I noticed that the temp gauge rose rather quickly almost to red zone. 
I had been driving only for ten minutes of so. Then it suddenly dropped back 
to normal. I stopped and added water (approx 3 pints till overflow) to be safe.

Has anyone else experienced this?
