Earlier post didn't appear to make it. Apologies if this is a repeat.
Other things to check are the relays. I've had bad connections there
cause trouble more than once. Just remove and replace. There is a
master relay which I believe controls all the electricals.
And then there's the good ol' "check were you were messing last".
Battery connections, any extra wires on the +/- leads that
were left off or corroded, etc. etc.
And for the battery ... check the voltage on the battery itself
and on the connectors while someone tries to engage the starter.
I've been fooled more than once by battery connections that
appear physically to be good but aren't making good contact.
On the push start idea, just put the thing in 5th gear and push
by hand to verify that the engine turns over. That will eliminate
the possibility that something froze up. I've never push started
my 2, but my 83 Camry is real easy to push start with two
people on a flat road. Even with a dead battery. I won't
get into the advantages of headlights that automatically
turn off :-) .
An aside ... on the freeway the other day I observed a pickup lock
up one the rear wheels. Lots of smoke and some fishtailing. The
driver did a good job of getting if over to the shoulder. AND,
amazingly enough, the rest of the traffic gave him room to
maneuver.
