[MR2] MkI ttransmissions, 5th gear

Kurt,
It's easier to swap the whole trans than to swap the gear parts. Better off
to find a low mileage trans and just do that. You'll need special tools to
pull the gear parts without chipping them (ask me how I know).

Your 86 would have come with a C50, just like mine. The real problem is that
the countershaft and it's bearings are not submerged in oil - it relies on
oil splash to lube the bearings. The later trans has larger bearings that
can hold up to that better. So, as the bearings wear, the main and
countershafts are forced apart due to the play in the bearings. It doesn't
take much wear to have poor shifting. These are just some of the reasons I
went to the 6 speed. At least that way I got a trans with low miles (about
35K) so I have a good 150K of life or more to look forward to.

You might want to think about buying a low mileage 5 speed from a silvertop,
swapping over the shift linkage and just going that route. You can usually
find them on E-bay for around $250.

My 86 has succumbed to the 5th gear pop out problem. That was supposed to
be a 'feature' of the C50 transmission, but my BGB says I have the C52.
Some sources indicate I actually have the C50. Anyone know the real story
here? How can I tell?
Also, was there another tranny in the NA line (C56 ????).

I've got the chance of obtaining a tranny from an 87. My intent is to mine
the 5th gear cluster assuming it's good.
I've verified that even if I have the C50, the 5th gears are the same.

Now that's assuming the 87's gears are good. Something that might be a crap
shoot if indeed I have the C52 tranny.

Anyway, how can I tell which tranny I have?
