[MR2] Valve Shims

Joe,

I would then suspect the valves. You might have them checked to see if they meet the OEM spec. Some aftermarket parts might not be the same as the OEM parts. A new head should have increased valve clearance with the correct valve.

Hi Dennis.
No machine shop did any work - the head was new from Toyota.  The valves are new (Ferrea), new stems, and new springs from ATS (Eagle I think they are).
I adjusted the clearance, drove it for about a month, and then the clearance got too tight on four intake valves.  I am certainly concerned that there might be an issue with the seats.  If there was, however, a leak down test would result in poor numbers - correct?  I'm wondering if, perhaps, the seats themselves just needed to be seated?

Joe,

Sounds strange that you don't have enough clearance with the standard size shims. It sounds like maybe there was too much wear on the valve seats.

Did a quality machine shop do the valve job? We just rebuilt a '91 turbo. The the machine shop only had to replace a couple of valves. After the machine work on the head the valve adjustment was right on the money with the original shims. I might have had to make a couple of adjustments but most were real close to the center of the spec.

Thanks Dennis.  I've been calling machine shops to see if I can find any - so far no luck.  I just posted on the MR2 message board, but wondering if any of you guys happen to have some ideas.
Several months ago, I installed a new head, new valves, new eagle springs, and HKS 264 cams. Checked the valve clearance and made it to specification.

After driving the car for about a month, it started to run poorly. The problem is that 4 intake valves on the #1 and #2 cylinders are no longer closing all the way due to 0 clearance. I tried putting in my thinnest shim (2.60mm), but there is still no clearance on any of the 4 intake valves.

Is there any reason for the clearance to tighten up like that? Anyone have that happen before? I'm wondering if I'll be able to find shims that will get me to the correct clearance.
All the other valves are still within spec.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Dave,

The MK2 turbo shim has a larger diameter than the MK1 shim. The MK1 shim seems to be the same size as those used for other engines. The MK2 seems to be different than any other engine I have found.

Also there seems to be a much smaller range of thickness for the MK2 shim.

Are the 4AGE and 3SGTE shims the same?  I have a bag of 16 4AGE shims
I can't use.
