I suggest taking off the rear console and central cover so you can see whats
going on. If the setup is sloppy because a few starnds have broken and the
rest stretched, you've already found your problem. If however the swapped trans
is what's causing the sloppiness, there are several different cables available
for each of the two involved, and I've never found anyone who could tell me
exactly what the differences were. And at over $120 each, I'm not inclined to
experiment blindly. I doubt if the powertrain could be relocated back- or fwd-
enough to take up the slack unless you cut & welded the steady-bar between
engine & chassis.
When mine broke, I found the low gear cable on the back of the shift stick
was running at a strained angle with the cable jacket ('92 turbo), which put a
bind in the cable end causing it to break after 100K not-easy miles. When I
replaced the cable, I used a piece of 3/4" pipe and a 4-lb hammer to pound a
smooth groove 3/8" deep in the floor so the bad cable angle was eliminated. I
probably also slightly bent the top of the fuel tank too, but all seems well 5
years later. None of this brutality shows, being under the console cover. Good
luck- J Deryke
