[MR2] Powder coat rims?

Mike, I can't imagine a "noticeable" weight penalty from painting a
wheel, particularly not "a few pounds". I very much doubt that the guy
weighed the wheels before and after, and his arm makes a poor scale. I
suspect he was trying to sell you on the quality of his work, to suggest
that he wasn't skimping on paint. In other words, just because he said
it doesn't mean that he knew what he was talking about, or that it was
true.

I've painted a few wheels before and it usually takes about one can of
spray paint per wheel to do a very thorough job. That's 12 ounces of
paint per can, or 3/4 of a pound. Nevermind that much of the paint that
comes out of the can doesn't end up on the wheel anyway, and much of
what does evaporates as the paint dries.

AHAHHHAHAHA!!!! That was too funny.

That brings up a good question about the effect of the extreme heat on
the wheel. Don't know about stock wheels but aftermarket wheels; I
always understood that they used the powdercoating method to have them
in the colors they offer such as Gunmetal; Gloss Black and so on.

There is this great wheel place around here in town and I've seen his
work. This one guy got his OZ Superleggras painted and it came out
great. He ended up using 6 coats and I asked him if there was a
difference in noticable weight? He did say yes they did pick up a few
pounds for each wheel and it was noticable before and after. Would
powdercoating have that?

I wouldn't think so because they sandblast the wheel then go with the
powdercoat correct?
