He said it doesn't happen at all when playing a CD, so doubtful it's an electrical issue. Have you tried replacing the antenna or seeing if a boosted one gives any better results? You might also try relocating the antenna to reduce whatever noise it's picking up in the engine bay... (Maybe your plug wires are bad/frayed and causing more interference than normal?)

I am not sure if the stock radio has any wet capacitors, but sometimes these (Along with other components) are used to smooth out any noise that would come in from the electrical system. If they dry out then they stop doing what they were put there to do. So you all of the sudden (If one goes bad) have noise. Or in the case of drying out over time it will get worse but that would have to be a long span of time. Personally I am suppried to hear of a stock radio from a 91 still working. That's a long time in my book.
You could do what Wayne suggests and it wouldn't necessarily "Mask" the issue but you would be "Cleaning" up the power before it gets to the stereo, just like the stock components are supposed to do (But are now failing)...
But because you have the premium there are a couple amps that could also be the cause of the problem.
I remember a thread a long long time ago on this list, people replacing a Capacitor in the stereo to address this problem. Someone took pictures and everything. But that was like 10 years ago. Search on MR2.com if your interested...
You could always replace the stereo as well...

Subject: [MR2] radio question, mk2t
Ok, this is a strange one. I have stock toyota 5mm wires (3rd gen engine using 93+plugwires), NGK bkr6e plugs (stock heat range, copper, resistor). I have used this setup for the last year and a similar stock setup with th eoriginal 3sgte.
I say this bc i have discovered an odd problem. My radio has developed a 'ticking' sound that is RPM dependent. I don't know what's changed on my car to suddenly cause this, but it is very annoying. The engine is a relatively stock 3rd gen, the radio is a stock 91 premium system (7 speaker cd/tape), and the issue just developed recently. the car runs smoothly, no issues with gas mileage/driving, etc, but there is just this noisy ticking sound in the radio. It is most noticeable on the weaker stations, still noticeable on the strong ones, and not noticeable at all when playing a cd.
any tips?
chris
