I had a bad switch on my 87 MKI several years ago.  Cruise would randomly cut out, and then usually refuse to reconnect, even though the power light would stay on.  Went without for several years (I think I even drove the Alaska highway before I got it fixed).  Finally replaced the (expensive) part on spec with no guarantee it would work - no problems since.
