OK I got enough requests for this , here is the gear info...
The conversion is pretty staright foward... however it only works on the
C-50 / C-52 trannys... not the E-51... or at least that what my research
has told me. The E-51 has a few bearings that have different size's than
the C's do... I haven't had a E-51 apart to actualy verify this though.
As for the actual spec's here they are:
C-50/52
1st 3.166 Final 4.3100
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.310
4th 0.969
5th 0.815
Paseo C-150
1st 3.545 Final 3.7220
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.310
4th 0.969
5th 0.815
This keeps 2-5 the same but still gives nearly the same ratio for 1st
gear...so you can still get out of the hole...
If you want it even faster there is a trans with a 3.524 final gear...
The E-51 trans has very similar ratio's as the C-50/52 series, I don't have
my chars on me at work... but I do know that some of them are exactly the
same. The final drive gears are NOT interchangeable form the E's to the
C's...
Here is the exact mix that I have...
Belhousing C-52 from '87 MR-2
center, and end cap C-50/52 from any 85-89 C series tranny
Internal gears 1-5 C-150 from 89-95 Paseo, some Corollas
Carrier assembly C-52 from '87 MR-2
The big difference between a C-50 and a C-52 is that the C-52 has
mounting's for the starter to bolt up to either the intake, or exaust side
of the motor. On NA MR-2's the starters were on the exaust side... I'm not
sure if it ever moved to the intake side, However this tranny was used in
other front wheel drive cars where heat from the exaust and the raditor
became a problem, so they moved the starter to the intake side. The SC
starter motor bolts right up to this location.
Some confusion is added because the C-50's and C-52's are used in both the
MR-2 and some other front drive cars... however the shift linkage exits the
tranny on opposite sides... in the MR-2 it exits on the exaust, slave
cylinder, firewall side... on a front drive car it exits on the intake,
differential, side... still keeping it near the firewall... Yet there is
no unit number designation difference between the units.
You can find this on the E-51's also...it was used in some front drive
Celica's..
Have you followed me ?
There are many more parts available for the C-series of trannys.. like
Thorsen diff's and LSD's and TRD has different gear sets for it, and there
are more clutch choices to fit the 4AGE/4AGZE motors to the C's ... Unless
you can't tell my personel preferance is the C-series...
The E-51, however is supposed to be a little stronger unit than the C's..
I have a few spare C-series trannys... but I don't have another donor
C-150 for the gears...but they can usually be found for $200-$400 from a
junk yard...But you have to be VERY careful... a C-150 looks almost exactly
like a C-50...and most yards can not tell them apart...
Hope this helps...
