  Location: Dallas, Texas, USA
Car: '93 Turbo, Black T-Top With Ivory Leather
   Mileage: 68k miles (Nov. '95)
 Purchased: August 1992

History:
I've loved the MR2 since I was a kid, and always wanted to have one
when I was in High School. At the time, given my income, I could never afford
one. My parents helped my brother purchase an '88 white supercharged when he
turned 16 in '92. I was a little disgruntled, and began working diligently to
attain the money required to purchase a new car. I scanned through as much
information as I could get my hands on. I was looking for the best handling
and braking car I could get. Obviously the MR2 was amazing, and price vs.
performance ratios were without compare. At the end of the summer of '92,
I sold my motorcycle and purchased one of the first '93s. Originally, I had
intended on purchasing a used '91 for financial reasons. However, I saw this
black '93 with the ivory interior etc... and fell in love with the car. It is
a struggle to pay for it, I have seen many 70+ hr work weeks. Upon buying
the car, I swore I was not going to be wreckless and flying all over the place
with it My brother said that was BS. The only problems I had with the car
were: Factory tire / supention / wheel combinations provided to much slide
and spin for the power of the car, it can be controlled, but why have it at
all? The car had a severe power loss over 5,500 rpms. Downshifting into a low
gear for passing or even mashing the gas while in a lower gear produced
noticeably less power than soft-pedaling the power on. Surging in the power
while in the upper RPM range. There was a "click" at certain RPM ranges.
[all of these power issues and the clicks were unable to be addressed or
explained by Toyota] CD Player skipped severly on certain cds. [this was due
to the 3 in 1 not adapting to "thinner" cds, a new 3 in 1 didn't have the
problem. My Sony has never had this problem.] Believe it or not, I don't
speed on city streets much. However, I love to corner and get up to speed
ASAP. This is where I originally noticed the performance related problems.
In January, after an incedent :) I proceeded to "fix" the handling problem.
After fixing the handling problem, the power inconsistancy was even more
apperant. So I was looking for the solution to even power, not excessive
power. I tried a Power Flow, and EVC which had more power, but did not get
rid of my intermitant power problems. [The nature of my power problems were
that the Toyota engine management computer drops voltage to the fuel pump to
limit power and emissions. The problem over 5,500 was partly exhaust related.
The "click" is related to the way the head was machined at the factory.]
Later on, after having a warped exhaust manifold, broken exhaust manifold
bolt, and need of a timing belt replacement. I took the part of the engine
apart, getting to the nessisary compenents, and ran into the "While I'm at
it!" which wound up yanking the whole thing apart. This brought it up to the
current level. The next wave of modifications will involve NOS, replacing the
engine computer, and dyno-based 3-d fuel map programing. [currently running too
rich in some RPM areas.] My clutch, synchos and shift cables are starting to
need replacement, I will address this within the next 2-3 months as time
permits. The car normally gets 21 mpg in town, and about 35 on the highway
[t-tops on]. This figure drops to a poor 12-16 mpg in town with heavy pedal
action.
