I went to an SFR school a year ago and had Charlie Davis as an instructor (used to drive a mkI). He was driving my car, trying to get through a slalom by downshifting to first and using the throttle to rotate the car. It was pretty amusing- the car just wouldn't turn for him, and he plowed head-on into most of the cones, and went way wide on the rest. Bobbetting? Huh? After all of this dicussion about door hinges, I took a look at the two '88SC doors sitting in my basement (waiting to be tossed, they've been gutted and I've run out of time to toss them). The driver door's hinges are somewhere else (have to find them), but the passenger door's hinges are still attached. Something I specifically noticed is that the top hinge is very loose and has lots of freeplay, but the bottom hinge is like new. The door is lying flat on the floor, so the hinges move up/down instead of left/right. The top hing is so loose that I can flick it up with a finder, and gravity brings it down rapidly and with a thud. With the bottom hinge, I need a few fingers to move the hinge (*very* stiff), and the hinge stays whereever I leave it. Anyone else notice if the hinges wear differently, and if so does the top hinge always wear faster? Also, if anyone needs a new passenger side bottom hinge, I'll give it away to a needy home (er, car). On New Year's Eve I briefly thought I smelled something burning, like plastic or insulation, but it was only for a moment and nothing seemed to come of it. A couple days later while going around a turn, my blower fan went off. It came back on past the turn, but round the next turn it went out for good. The clock went out too... along with some other things. As near as I can tell, the symptoms are like this... All gauges incl voltmeter read normally. Idiot lights & clock run normally with the ignition one turn past "Lock", but go out when you turn the ignition to "On". The clock may later turn back on, albeit *very* dimly, depending on the position of the fan speed switch. The fan seems to run at a very slow, barely noticable speed when switched on. In some not-off positions, the clock gets some power, as mentioned above. The heater panel backlights are not affected and seem to work normally. All outside lights, dashboard lights & indicators, power locks & dome lights all seem to work fine. Anything I haven't mentioned, like cruise control, either works ok or hasn't been tested yet. I don't expect someone to offer a precise diagnosis based on this, I'd be happy with a few bits of info I have not yet found in the BGB: I know of 3 fuse boxes, are there more, and if so, where are they? Someone lately mentioned junction boxes, where are they, or where in the BGB does it show them? The BGB schematics mention a grounding point "under" the left A-pillar. Um how far under? Is it inside the A-pillar, as in remove the trim, or lower down in the car? Any suggestions or hints appreciated. I suspect an intermittent open ground somewhere, and expect a long cold unpleasant day ferreting it out. I made sure to get all the air out, it took a long time. Well even before i did the flush, at idle, the motor would "cut out" every few seconds sometimes even stalling, all most as if it the coil or coil wire had a loose connection. I checked the contacts and all seems well. It occurs when the motor is warm and only at idle, which i turned up to 1000rpm's so it wouldnt stall so much. As soon as i rev the motor a bit, it is clear, but as soon as it falls back to idle, it will start "cutting out" again. A couple weeks ago i put on new rotor, cap, wires, and plugs(platinums). Its not really like a "miss", i know what that is and this is not missing. I really hope its not the igniter, but i am dreading that it is, because i have heard its not cheap. Its really a pain in traffic, sometimes it stalls if the light is too long, maybe my MR2 just really wants to be driven! :-) Mike Craig 86 MR2 http://members.aol.com/SportRidr/intro.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 12:45:07 -0800 From: "Patrick Smith" Subject: MR2 GO GO GO GO DENVER !!!!! sorry , i'm excited... It was the one that holds the backing plate to the trans, enters from the engine side. No extra bolts now! Test Drive: Drove my '93T with the new trans. Clutch is perfect and it's a little notchy right now. It loosened up just a bit during a 10 minute drive, so I expect as the Redline gets properly circulated it will ease up more. Clean upshifts and a little notchy downshifts. Clear Corners: I installed mine, but I'm having trouble snapping in the lens portion. It just won't snap in no matter how hard I push. I expect it's due to the 25F temperature making the "snap" harder than usual, but I wanted to see if anyone had this same problem. If so I'll put a heater on it then snap them in. Thanks. Hi, I have heard of a product called Meguiar's Clay. It is a soft bar of some kind that you rub on the finish to remove the embedded junk from it. The Fiero list and the CRX list members have mentioned this product in a positive manner at various times. Also, have you considered the Meguiar's 3-step system? Hope this helps. The effects of being parked outside, acid rain etc all build up on the cars paint. The solution though is a very simple one. Purchase a paint cleaner (like a polish) it only has cleaning agents and doesn't protect the paint. This will remove any contaminants and also any fine scratches. I use Meguiars products and find them excellent. After you go over the whole car with the paint cleaner, then apply some Meguiars "Wet Look" Poly Sealant. This is different to normal polishes as it doesn't remove a thin layer of paint, it applys a layer of protection. Once you do this, run the back of your hand (the front has oils which damage the paint) along the surface and feel how smooth it is. You will be amazed. No I don't work for Meguiars, just use their product and swear by them.
