I feel there is a sort of covenant here and much prefer a voluntary honor system. We are not doing real "business" here and we are not "companies". Personally, I've bought many things here and have always paid in advance, sight unseen. Heck...I even bought a car this way! The point is, that dealing with you guys, I feel I'm dealing with "friends". This is a distinction that I am happy to make. Having said this, I "have" had many bad experiences dealing with companies (not just pertaining to my car hobbies, but unfortunately in the business world as well...) Nevertheless, I still think that for the odd, unfortunate bad apple that pops up here from time to time, it's probably enough to simply mention it the way we have. Maybe I'm only saying all this because I haven't been screwed, who knows... Just my .02 (again) Tommy Guttmann tools@tooltech.qc.ca Montreal, Canada (without electricity at home since last Monday! The ad claims it has 23,000 miles. About two weeks ago I called the owner/seller and the car sounded great. So my fiance and I drove 2 1/2 hours up to OK City to see the car. black black cloth interior turbo 2.0 5 spd 14" stock alloys 3 in 1 stereo 23,8?? showing on the odometer etc. The story was that the first owner wrecked the car several years ago (relativly light sideswipe) with only 21,000 miles on the clock. They did not have full coverage and could not afford to fix the car, so they let it sit for several years. Well a bodyshop came along, bought the car, and repaired it. The current seller bought it from the body shop. The story/car has a few flaws: seats are VERY worn, with several minor rips and tears Not original tires...surely a set of RE71's would hasve lasted 23,000 miles? one side of the car has nice silver stock wheels, the other side has ugly grey wheels body panel alignment is awful, hood is crooked, engine cover will not pop up, trunk lid rubs engine cover.... struts and shocks are worn out turbo boost guage is non-functional 3 in 1 stereo has a short in it, sounds like dirt driverside power window switch panel is broken I seriously doubt the owner's claims of 23,000 miles. Don't waste your time. For those who don't know what they are there clear or smoked plastic sheilds that stick along the trim to help keep the rain and wind out when the windows are open. Hi Chris, I had a set of Nologys on my SC and (asides from any performance debate) returned them because they simply did not fit properly. They were supplied with some generic boot which was not a snug fit. Looked tacky and was definitely not watertight. Just ordered a set of Magnecors, which are claimed to fit snugly on the SCs (which have a unique sized boot, BTW)...otherwise, they'll take em back. Just curious...how do yours fit? Ok? Seams kinda strange that at 13psi higher than my basically stock MKII he's only making 60 more HP. I think it's a real trend with a lot of turbo cars to just run up the boost real high with the only other mods being intake and exhaust. And I think the exhaust is mainly being done for looks. I also feel there are a lot of shops claiming they can hot-rod out your import/turbo and this is all they really know how to do. Kinda scary if you ask me. They continue to increase PSI until the engine "mysteriously" blows up and say "that's strange, I guess it was a bad engine..". On a similar note, my friend who tunes rotary and circle track racecars showed me an article that showed the difference between a motor running 26psi, and the same engine running 15-17psi but with some relatively simple engine/head work such as flowed heads and some cam timing, and the lower psi engine produced around 60-80HP more than the engine that just tried to stuff more air in the manifold. Both had the same intake and exhaust. A fairly interesting article. Have a good one. Gordon McQuillin 91'T Black -----Original Message----- I asked him how much boost he was running and was surprised when he told me 23psi. He told me that stock was around 11psi. I asked him if he had sufficient fuel for that much boost. He didn't know what I meant which concerned me. Do any of you know how much a Supra can safely boost without going too lean? He has an aftermarket intake, exhaust, fcd, removed cats, etc and the car only has 7k on it. If so, what did you go with, where did you get them. I seem to remember someone posting that they found aircraft quality hose clamps (at Alamo?)... could someone describe these? I'm also looking for a source for (colored) silicone vacuum line, so that I can mount my boost gauge permanently (and replace some of the stock vacuum line). Steve N. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 1998 09:39:32 -0700 From: "McQuillin, Gordon" Subject: RE: MR2 MK2 problems I had a similar problem. The key was real difficult to turn in the driver's door or the ignition, and opening the door I almost always had to turn the key to the front of the car first and then to the back of the car to get it to open. I figured it was the locks since it seemed to work great in the passenger door, but the key was pretty worn. Well on my X-Mas trip to Pasadena, CA it all came to a head as I was filling up with gas and about to hop on the interstate to come home to Tucson, AZ. It was Sunday and as I got back in the car, put the key in the ignition, it broke in ½! Lucky for me the broken part was still sticking out of the ignition, and I could pull it out with my fingers. So we waited at the gas pump for ½ hour waiting for a locksmith to show up (while everyone kept asking me to hurry up and more my car please. Damn that steering column lock, I couldn't even push/steer the car to a convenient parking spot....) The locksmith was real good though, and made a new key from a Toyota spec sheet as opposed to trying to copy from the old worn key, and not only did it work the first time, but a lot smoother than the old key did. To top it off, it was an emergency call the weekend after X-Mas on-site and the guy only charged me $45, which AAA should pickup the cost of anyway. All the locks work fine the first time now, and as the sharp edges wear off the key it all gets better. So after all of my rambling, here's the recommendation... Have a locksmith (not a key copier at a local hardware shop) make a new key to toyota specs and see if that fixes the problem. It'd be cheaper than new locks which I was considering, and have been told is only a few dollars less than the nation debt! Hope this helps. Gordon McQuillin 91'T Black ----Original Msg---- >3. If the weather drops below 40F or so it must be turned the opposite way first before unlocking, and sometimes I have to fiddle with it. You'll see the time appear on the Gtech before you reach 60 mph. This way, you could predict how fast your car would do 0-60 if it had 312hp.
