I didn't have to make any modifications to the body panels of the MKI. However, I did have to make an easy addition. I had some 1/8" Lexan laying around that I used to do this. Plexiglas will work too; it just doesn't offer much shatter resistance, and UV rays embrittle it quicker than Lexan. Anyway, I used the OEM "brick" (how true!) as a template to fabricate a mounting plate for the NACA duct. I then cut an opening for the NACA duct in the flat Lexan plate. I attached the NACA duct to the Lexan plate with double-sided sticky tape ("AT&T tape"). I used cork as a gasket between the Lexan plate and the fender panel. I attached the Lexan plate and NACA duct combination using the OEM screws. I mounted the NACA duct to the lower half of the Lexan plate. This will make for the least amount of bend in the inlet ducting into the engine compartment, or whever else you may route it. This doesn't look symetrical, but form follows function in race cars; at least for me. Also I had to decide whether to mount the NACA duct flush or the panel flush. I couldn't have both, unless I templated another piece of Lexan to flush up the NACA duct. I didn't want to add the weight, so I didn't do that. As I remember, I shimmed the Lexan plate with two cork gaskets to push the NACA duct even with the body panels. This may or may not have been a waste of effort. I can only surmise what ariflow along the side panels is like. When in doubt, I use the common sense approach. When completed, I painted the UNDERSIDE of the Lexan panel and NACA duct combination to sort-of-match the MKI's white color. Painting the underside of a clear panel approximates the color, but gave scratch protection to the inexpensive spray paint I used. Good luck. This is another good question. You must be an airflow freak like me! I spent a lot of time thinking about that black box while sitting on a stool in the garage. For what its worth, here goes: The MKI air inlet design can at the least ingest moisture from its sourrondings. At times, it may even ingest large amounts of spray, or even raw water. Near as I can figure, this black box is a place to collect this moisture and water before discharge back onto the road's surface. I only came up with this after I pulled the "black box" and observed traces of previous moisture and water presence. Back when I was competing in SCCA CSP AutoCross with the car, I drilled as many 3/4" holes as I could in the box. It looked to me like another way to provide air to the induction system. HOWEVER, before you do that look carefully! My MKI is in storage on the mainland now, and I can't remember if that discharge [modified by me to inlet] bypasses the OEM air filter or not. I was real careful not strip stuff off when I was racing CSP. Cheers. Keep your MKI breathing. The best place I found was behind the driver's seat for me (Subwoofer was behind the passenger's seat). And how did I attach it? I just bolted it vertically onto the carpet at the back in front of the firewall. I know it kinda sounds dumb, but it meant that I didn't have to screw it into the firewall. Secondly, because it was bolted to the carpet/insulation, which is very soft, it was excellent for preventing skipping. I have yet to have mine skip once in 3 years. Cheers ... After Shawn's problems I decided that I would get one anyway (mistake? maybe.) Turbo on car and tuning appears that turbo is spooiling much slower than expected. It is larger so maybe this is just the way it will be. Major problems mid range undre high boost settings. In an effort to tune the car and eliminate this we adjusted timing and fuel and after a really succesful run the car was iddling and making a funny noise??? Smoke would pour out the PCV under throtle and the car was now making only 238 hp at the rear wheels. Lots of smoke. Very sadly it was determined that something broke. There was no detonation, smoke or other odd behavior on the last good run so we thought it was something minor. Aleak down test showed us to be wrong. #4 leaks to 75%. UGH! I made 238 hp on three cylinders! Should I be happy? Anyway I am now looking at either blowing a lot of cash to just get the car running again or selling my sould for the next couple of months and building up a streetable version of the SCC motor (bored stroked etc) Any suggestions? Anyone have any extra bits laying around (pistons etc) that they would like to give me? Anyone have an engine (simple long block deal) that they would like to sell. I don't need trannies, ecus, turbos or anything else. Anyway just wanted to cry on some sympatheic shoulders. A word of warning, move with caution. A schematic diagram for the electrical system of a '91 or later supercharged Levin. There should be a foldout one in the back of the factory service manual for these cars. I'm aware that any text will be in Japanese which is fine. The technicians who will be doing the swap are Japanese. In fact if I could get the entire service manual including the schematic, I'd be very interested. I also would like to get the factory rebuild kit (gaskets, seals etc) as well as rings and bearings for the 4A-GZE from the newer AE-92. I'm assuming that at least the head gasket wuld be different than on a US SC car or earlier AE-92 because of the increased boost and CR. Anyone know for sure? I personally have Simpson five-point 3" harnesses in my 85 MkII along with Sparco Road buckets. I paid $190 for each set of Simpson harnesses with the Cam-lock and about $330 for each Sparco plus you need to pay for the brackets. My recommendation: Simpson Harnesses (Definitely get the cam-lock one - not the latching one) and if you use the shop I'm about to tell you about...Cobra seats that are the same design as the Sparco Road (most manufacturers produce this exact same design but with different seat materials - essentially the exact same as one another). The shop is in Huntington Beach California (SoCal/Orange County) and is called Sube Sports. They are Team Subaru (yes the Rally team) and are also the biggest supplier of Cobra seats plus they have a lot of other cool stuff. Here's the list of what I've purchased from them so far: - -Sparco Road seat + plus brackets - -TRW/Sparco Harness pads - -Simpson Harness - -Hella Conversion Lens' (Off-road of course) - -Piaa headlights The president (small Company) is Chad. He has 1st, 2nd and 3rd place plaques all around his office from his Rallying days. His prices are the best I could find and I've been to several race shops and tuners.
