I remember that old fart. He had the fastest Caddy we'll ever see: over 200 mph terminal velocity. Believe it. His vanity license plate read: "1FASTMF" ... I'm not big on vanity license plates, but I'd pay the State 25 bux a year for that plate (there's one I like better: "IXLR8" ...saw that one on a Lamborghini Miura). There use to be an affluent, exclusive enthusiast group that called themselves the Turismo Vistadors, but I don't think the guy with the Caddy ran with this crowd. Does anyone remember hearing about these old Turismo Vistador guys? They'd wine and dine state officials to "look the other way" as they pounded across the asphalt in their exotic sports cars. An exclusive group: You had to be able to cut it in the nice guy department, as well as on the balance sheet, to run with that crowd. I heard speculation of a bad shunt in the mid-to-late 80's, whereby a prominant venture capitalist and his wife were ejected from their Pantera at triple digit speeds somewhere out in —ø®Ý™´®— ç嬖Ÿø®—–å when on rallye with this group. Wonder whatever happened to those old guys, though? I'd sure like to assemble a group like that. But, I can personally testify that, out there in the canyons at dawn, these days, it belongs to me and only me. Everybody's sleeping in nowadays. I don't know what the RPMs were, 'cos my brother was checking the speedo, and I was looking at the road. I might add the road was empty (stretch of the A1 recently re-surfaced, Christmas Day morning 9am ish, passed not one car during this stint), and no other cars around. My brother is older than me, and quite capable of understanding the risks!. Lets face it, speed is fun, but there are times, places and circumstances for it. i.e. empty road, no passengers, away from towns etc.., suitable road. Are these things expensive (ball park figure)? >Can I install it myself? Can they be removed when not in use so that the >standard seat belt can be used for daily driving? Ball park price would be $125-150. Maybe more if you want shoulder strap pads and a cam-lock type harness. I had the Schroth Rallye 3 harness in my '94T autox car, and it worked fine for autox. It was mounted to the baby seat mounting point and the stock outer seat belt mount and the seat track bolt for the inner lap belt mount. The shoulder strap had a quick release so I could disconnect it when not in use and stuff it under the rear of the seat and stow the t-tops. However, the Schroth harness and any harness with Y-type shoulder straps is not legal for SCCA road racing or Solo I events. For these high-speed events you need a true 5 or 6-point harness. I have road raced my '91T and my '93NA in SCCA club racing so they both have 5-point harnesses. Both cars have the stock seats. The '91 doesn't have a hole in the seat for the sub belt and it works fine, although it does scrunch the front of the seat cushion a little. The '93 has a hole in the seat, nicely done by an upholstery shop, and this is better. The shoulder straps mount to the rear bulkhead using eye-bolts and large washers. The other straps also mount through the body using eye-bolts and large washers, except for the outer lap belt which uses an eye bolt in place of the stock seat belt mounting bolt. You can get snap-in harnesses so you can remove then anytime you want. I use my stock belts for street driving. >Also, has anyone installed a rollbar into an Mk2? How much did it cost >and does it make the car noticably more cramped? Is there even room in >the MR2 for a rollbar?? I have a full roll cage in my race car. It is an Autopower bolt-in cage, 6-point. It does make things more cramped, and makes it a lot more difficult to get into and out of the car. It weighs about 100 lbs. It restricts rearward seat movement slightly, but I still have plenty of legroom. If you are really tall and like your seat all the way back, you might have a problem. I imagine that Autopower also makes just a rollbar which would be more practical for daily street use. The cage would interfere with T-top stowage, but my cars are hardtops so I don't care. My cars came with roll cages, so I don't know the exact price, but I think they are around $500. I currently have the cages removed, but I'll reinstall one into the '93NA before the racing season starts again. Guy was asking $4500 (if I remember correctly). My rule of thumb: take the dealer's asking price, then subtract 50-75%. Stick closer to 50% if you're really interested. Regardless, It seems the faster I make my car, > the slower I drive. How very true this observation is. I noticed that I was driving the new (old) "stock" SC that I just picked up, a lot quicker than my old tweaked one. I guess, because the "stock" one has lower limits (softer chassis , etc.) it makes it a bit easier to feel confident in pushing it a little harder on street. It's not as "extreme". It may also be a bit of a feeling of "having it available" and not having to show it too... BTW, John's numbers highlighted to me that perhaps my relatively quick 0-60 times of 5.64 sec (for a mildly modded SC) are partly because my tallish 215/50x15s in back allow me to carry 2nd gear just past 60...obviating the need for a shift into 3rd. This is something to consider when comparing times car to car... I recall original road tests of SCs from magazine to magazine ranging wildly from 6.5 secs to 7.5. I guess part of this may have been that some shifted at 7500, while others may have shifted when best (for a stock one, anyway) which if I remember correctly was lower (around 7000?) Besides all the countless other variables... Kinda like what you see in some shops that post the checks that bounce for all to see. Sure, email addresses will change, but REAL NAMES used by the buyers and gotten by the sellers can be posted in this area. This area is used for deals that merchandize was sent, and no money was sent in return, not for who's right or wrong issues on service, etc. Those issues really become difficult to sort out, and probably should be avoided except for information passing purposes to the list.
