I just got the car a little over a month ago and I haven't tried manually downshifting when it's cold. It sounds to me like we are both having the same symptoms as far as trans problems go. Like yours mine will shift when it reaches a certain temp and shifts from then on as long as I'm driving even if the temp drops a little. The owners manual said it won't shift in to overdrive until the temp reaches 122 degrees. I still think that it is taking a little too long to shift, and is reaching 122 way before it does so. But with no degree marks on the temp gauge who knows? BTW- I got the car for only $400.00! Yes four hundred! It's got over 200,000 miles on it but it doesn't smoke at all and has great oil pressure. It's got cruise, tilt, sunroof, leather, and is the best handling car I have ever owned. At last I was able to make time and work on my 91 Turbo (broke the engine back in mid Nov) Everything is disconected and I will be droping the engine and transmission this Saturday. The feedback I got from the list was to replace the 91 with a 93 (the usual 2nd and 3rd gear problem) Even when the trans is not in that bad shape, only grinds 2nd gear when upshifting and 3rd when downshifting, now that everything will be down Its better to fix it now than wait until it finally pass away. I started this on my '86. I installed a Small NACA duct (Pegasus p/n: 3627-Clear) in place of the VERY HEAVY OEM cast aluminum duct. I never installed ducting though; and this goes to your question of what the duct is for. The purpose of the duct and its associated thermostatically controlled fan is to extract excessive heat from the engine compartment during times of extended idle or extended high output. I surmised that Toyota engineers probably put this duct in a low [air] pressure area to assist the fan in hot air extraction. A low pressure area is not a good place for an air inlet. A high pressure area works best. Additionally, there were two other factors that disuaded me from completeing this idea: 1) Any of the ducting I could afford would result in excessive friction losses in air movement through the ducting. Plus, I figured I would have to reflectivly wrap the ducting [read: more weight] to prevent heating up the air I was ducting to the inlet. 2) Besides, I still had to make two 90 degree turns in the ducting to the inlet [unless I radically re-designed the inlet], this would have resulted in additional friction [read: heat] losses. Anyway, it looks cool, but doesn't do much for function. I'll probably change it. You can achieve a significant weight savings, though. But. . . if your're drag racing, you might want to keep that weight, its back and up high to assist in front-to-rear weight transfer. If you're AutoCrossing and your battery is in the stock location, you might want to keep it to counter-balance the battery weight. How could you guarantee that the "black list" wouldn't be used to hurt someone, or lash out because you feel you were mistreated (both parties have their own point of view on it). It's obvious for cases where someone gets stiffed, but I wouldn't use it for other cases. Any business will eventually have some customers that feel wronged. In many cases, there is a problem on both sides, but even a perfect business will have some customer upset. Let us look at a theoretical instance. Names are not important, but lets say we have a list member whorunshiswordstogetheralot. He is upset because he had some difficulty with a particular MR2 vendor in Colorado (again, names are not important). I have had nothing but good service from same vendor, but recognize that fellow list member feels wronged. Who would the jury be to decide if this joins the "black list". All theoretical of course. Anyways, I drove my completly stock 1988 NA, only thing differnt were aftermarket ARE 15" weels and brand new Goodyear tires. The car was black/bluish with a 5 speed gearbox and t-tops. On route 211 in fauquier county virginia near warrenton. If anyone knows this streatch of highway it's flatout for a long way. It was 3am, noone around... So I wanted to see how fast I could go. The speedo said 133mph, and I kept it up for several miles. When the sheriff's deputy who was manning the speed trap that nite finally caught up with me in downtown warrenton and took my license away from me and called my parents and yelled at me for thirty mins, he told me I was only going 122mph. So what lesson can we learn from me bad luck? Toyota's speedometers ARE WAY OFF! I don't recall where *exactly* the rpms were, but it was buried far into the red zone. I swear I'll never do it again! I got my license back last year after a 6 month suspension and some very hefty fines. That's my input, your results may vary. Just for kicks are there any Catawba College alumni on this list? Some other groups I'm part of have some members who regularly buy and sell several thousand $ worth of equipment every month, pretty much all over the net. In support of this they have net.references, just like in real life. It's not very organized though, it's more "back alley asking around", which IMO is more subject to one person's ill will or vindictiveness. If someone made a "Black/White List", which had the buyer's name & email, the seller's name & email and a "satisfaction rating" from 1-10, I think this could be very useful w/o being very abusable. (Optionally the entry might have comments, or some details of the transaction, perhaps simply dollar amount.) People who bought or sold something would post the concise details, and you could find out about someone by writing to people they'd dealt with. One unhappy person might badmouth others, but you would presumably also see input from other satisfied people. If one person badmouthed *many* people there, their opinions would probably be taken with a grain of salt. OTOH someone who stiffed even a few people would have a number of marks showing against them. As a courtesy, people would take a minute to submit the results of their transactions, good or bad, since the system only really works if people compliment as well as complain. > Who would the jury be to decide if this joins the "black list". All > theoretical of course. Each potential buyer/seller would be the "Jury". They'd review the evidence, ask for clarification via email, and render their own verdict. It's true that every business will have some unsatisfied customers, but most should have many more happy ones. This setup would let us see that, and also identify any *unjustified* chronic complainers who would make mountains out of molehills. Chris C. p.s. So far I've bought things from Matt Ledbetter, David Hawkins, Steve B. and MR2PP, and have been 100% satisfied in each case. ------------------------------ End of mr2-digest V2 #69
