I took my 2 in to the service department at the Acura dealership where I work to get a LOF. The mechanic spilled oil all over the engine bay, really made an unholy mess. So he takes it to recon to steam clean the engine, gets water in the distributor, and then when he tries to start it, he fries the plugs. Anyway, I'm not sure what else happened (I was at auction at the time) but the end result is that I now have a new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs... free of charge. Pretty cool stuff. Anyway, I really notice a difference in performance since the tuneup. Amazing that an engine with 120K runs so smoothly... I love my car! Whenever I get my oil changed at Toyota, there is always a good chance that it will smoke a bit, which prompts people to point rather quizically at my smoking bonnet and make strange faces. I wave it off, because I know that the Mk1 header practically wraps around the area where the oil filter is located and a couple drops on the header are not unusual. If the smoke continues, I'd be concerned, but I get this almost after every oil change. Steve, you mention leaving the cap on 1 click and running the car for 3 minutes, then re-opening the cap only to have coolant rush out. Sounds to me like you won't get anywhere bleeding the air that way. The idea is to bleed air out of the system from the furthest points (similar in principal to bleeding brake hydraulic systems). Those points are the valves located in the front of the car with the plastic hoses attached to them held high in the air. Unfortunately, this is a rather messy and time consuming job. I have done my cooling systems on both of my MR2's several times. You just have to keep watch on the fluid level on those lines while they are suspended from the front trunk lid, as the BGB shows. I don't have a level surfact to park my MR2 on, so I can't do it exactly as the book shows, but the principal is the same. Get the air out from those two points in the front of the car. By the way, this procedure takes over an hour, not several 3-minute segments! Also, with regard to recommended service intervals, most dealers have recommended service intervals that they recommend, and they are the same no matter what model Toyota you drive. Obviously, this cannot be correct. Make sure you follow the FACTORY service intervals, NOT the DEALER service intervals! They are usually quite different! Make sure to get the BGB (Big Green Book), the factory shop manual. The factory always lists two interval schedules; one for "normal" and one for "severe". If you follow the severe (or severe x .5), you can't go wrong. I knew something was up when I owned my first MR2 and took it in @ 1,000 miles for a first oil change (I belive in early and often when an engine is new). They wanted to also do a "lube". I said no, as nothing can need lubrication in only 1000 miles. I took the car in at 2,000 miles for the second oil change, and again they wanted to do a "lube". I said no again. When I took the car in again at 5,000 for the third oil change and they tried to hit me again for a lubrication job, I waited for the car to be up on the lift, went back and spoke to the mechanic under my car, and asked him why do they keep trying to get me to lube the car? He looked at me, laughed, and told me that there are no lubrication points on my car! I angrily stormed back to the service writer, and demanded to know just what it was that they wanted to lube and charge me for. He said "the door hinges, trunk lid hinges, etc". I screamed at him that I wouldn't have bought a car so poorly made that it needed grease on hinges every 1,000 miles! That and the fact that they always spilled oil on the exhaust manifold and the car would smoke excessively from the engine compartment vents are the reasons that, since 1986 I've been doing oil changes on the MR2's myself. The MK1 was harder (more difficult filter access), but the MKII is a breeze! I even have a sort of petcock drain valve replacement for the drain plug, so it's even easier. The part is certainly reliable enough, as the same one has been on both MR2's I've owned with more than 180,000 combined miles with oil changes typically at 2,000 mile intervals (man, that's a LOT of oil!) Lesson for the day... Don't go by dealer guidelines for service. Go by what Toyota recommends, and if possible, do the easier stuff yourself. - ------- Joe Pearlstein mailto:nu3y@critpath.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Dec 1997 08:51:38 -0400 From: bagdon@rust.net (S and K Bagdon) Subject: Re: MR2 MKII Coolant Flush >I've got a Taurus SHO with an aluminum head (by Yamaha), and it requires >coolant flush every 24 months. Comparison of the flushing schedule with >other vehicles is apples and oranges unless they also have alum. heads. Ford made a big thing about going to a preventative scheduled maintenance plan that maches every car (and truck?) across their line. There was something about there being 150+ schedules, when including every make, model, engine and tranny option, etc. I'm sure that by going to a standard time spec, they are following the 'least common denominator' theory, so there will be some cars that now get 'over serviced'. But it's supposed to be a real help for dealers and DIYers, so that there is no confusion about differences models. Does Toyota do this, have they ever done this, etc? My only thought would be that Ford doesn't have forced induction any more (Probe Turbo and Thunderbird SC are no more, but the Jaguar isn't 'officially' a Ford-labeled vehicle), so it would be easier. I figure if toyota did this, the Supra Turbo would make a lowly Camry be getting oil and coolant changes a lot more frequently!
