They are dripping oil on the exhaust manifold when they take out the oil filter. It's happened to me before. This is one of the reasons I started doing my own oil changes, besides the fact that I wanted to start using Mobil 1, and the oversized Toyota oil filter that Sarizer put on my car when they did my engine rebuild. That part number by the way is 15601-33021 for the filter. If the smoking is the only reason that your garage is saying you need a new valve cover gasket, I'd get a second opinion. I recall something about coolant becoming excessively acidic due to a reaction with aluminum and causing damage (pitting) due to its low PH. I've got a Taurus SHO with an aluminum head (by Yamaha), and it requires coolant flush every 24 months. Comparison of the flushing schedule with other vehicles is apples and oranges unless they also have alum. heads. Anyway, pretty cheap proceedure (except for those dam broken clips), but time consuming.
