Ron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 22:32:39 -0500 From: nu3y@CritPath.Org Subject: MR2 heel & toeing (again?!?) Asking at what RPM is it best to heel and toe a downshift in is like saying what gear is best for turning right! Understand that all heel and toeing is doing in effect is matching up flywheel speed to the output shaft of the transmission in whatever gear you are downshifting into while braking at the same time. The purpose for this is to slow (most likely for a corner) while downshifting to prepare to accelerate through and out of that corner in the proper gear, while maintaining as close to a silk-like smoothness in that downshift as possible. You know you are doing it correctly when the car goes down a gear while slowing down without jerking at all. If it is jerky, you aren't doing it correctly. If it is smooth, you can't hurt the car (unless you are over-revving). Practice the downshifting technique with the appropriate throttle blip without braking just to understand what the actual shifting/clutch/throttle relationship is, then work on the heel/toe braking part of it. If done properly, your clutch, transmission, u-joints, c-v joints, or whatever you have last longer! The fastest way to learn? Hell, drive a car with no synchros or totally worn-out synchros and not be able to afford to fix the trans! You learn FAST! Mine was a 1964 Fiat 600D (pregnant roller skate with a rear engine). No synchro in first, absolutely wornout synchro in 2nd, and worthless synchros in 3rd and 4th! It took me about 2 days when I was 17 to drive it around the block without grinding, and the technique has stayed with me to this day. - ----- Joe Pearlstein '91 Crimson Red MKII, Past owner of '86 Super Red MKI Philadelphia, PA mailto:nu3y@critpath.org ICQ# 3480202 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 22:33:35 EST From: Conti64542 Subject: MR2 Re: mr2 touch-up paint In a message dated 97-12-24 20:18:11 EST, you write: > 1) I am in desperate need of some touch up pait for my mr2. It's very unlikely that a dealer will stock a 13-yr old color. I'd be a little surprised if they could even order it. Not to worry: just call a store that specializes in automotive paint. Give them your color code and they will have a pint ready by the time you stop by. It'll cost a bit more than the $5 tube of touch-up, but you'll get *many* times more paint. If you don't have the code (or can't find it), they'll have chips that you can look at to match. Good luck. - -Renni ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Dec 1997 07:43:39 -0800 From: Byron Subject: Re: MR2 MKII (various questions) Ivan, Don't use Slick 50. Hi guys With the 272 TRD cams I think the engine is running a bit lean from what I can tell from the plugs, even with the MAF mod. Will changing to GZE injectors make a difference? I was told that the flow of the 4AGE injectors are 150 and the GZE ijecotrs flow 200 something? Will that mean that the GZE injectors will flow more fuel all the time or will that mean that there is more headroom available in the injector if I need it on full throttle etc.. Anyone suggest any other injectors that will do the trick? I remember Dave A saying that he changed to Celica 3SGE injectors or something? I have three things to discuss real quick: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) I am in desperate need of some touch up pait for my mr2. It is a 1985 in metallic blue. I can't find any touch up paint for it. Does anyone know where I can get some. Will a Toyota dealership have it? - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open your front trunk and pull the color code. Buy or order at the dealer. - ----------------------------------------------- 2) Funny thing today, I took my car to Pep Boys for an oil change (it was convenient and I was busy all day). And it happened! I watched from inside the store out a window that overlooks the garage. The guy pulled my car in and popped the hood (or so he thought), he goes to the front of the car, lifts up the trunk. It was so funny to see his face as he saw there was no engine! Just a humorous thing to see. Just be careful when you bring your cars to these places, they really don't have a clue. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Come on, this doesn't deserve comment. Take your car to Manny Moe & Jack & get what you get - don't be surprised & don't complain. 3<> P.S. I really need the touch up paint. Your metallic blue probably will be a bit dark (new paint) at this point but it is the best you can get...Bottles at the dealer aren't that expensive... Bill William L. This 86 was an option - a green with a beige or golden two-tone - - anyone seen it? Never saw a 2 tone MR2 before this - but it was like Mazda's offering of a BRG Miata and tan interior...I would've bought said car 10 years ago except it had 65K miles on it and it was 2-2.5 years old. When asked about maintenance the girl said "my uncle takes care of it" - asked if said uncle was mechanic and she said "no" - well that wouldn't have been the first MR2 encountered that needed timing belt/coolant flush - pretty much everything. it wasn't bad - I just looked another day and got my black/black leather 86 - another rare option... But this '86 was nice - tempted to stop and talk to the owner... BTW saw in the paper today (Sacto CA) a '93 Turbo - 60K miles "excellant" (whatever that means) for $10.5K... Bill William L. When the MR2 first came out, Dave Zinn Toyota in Miama had one in that color as their test car. I fell in love with that color, and have always said that I will paint a car that color one day... Hi Robin Wanted to congratulate you on digging in and doing the cam swap and getting it running. Hope you get the bugs worked out. For those of us who are not mechanics, it is really rewarding to get in, do a procedure and succeed. You feel so much more affinity for your car when you are done. When my '87 MR2 hit 120k miles I did the 120k service myself. I took 2 weeks to do what a qualified mechanic could do in one day, but when i was done, there were no spare parts and no leaks (whew, those o-rings on the water pump feed pipe sure are an act of faith--you don't know till it's all buttoned up if you've gotten them in right). Anyway, I went the whole route-- labeled jars, etc, etc. Step by step, one step at a time. The only rookie mistake I made was to rotate the crank with the shims OUT of the buckets. The camshafts made a nice path as they passed right thru the lifters, taking whatever metal they needed to with them. I was mortified, but replaced the damaged ones and proceeded. This required removing the cams and replacing them. The only mod I did at that time was to intall HKS cam timimg pulleys. My mechanic friend came over, got TRD on the phone and degreed the cams for me. All the other work I did myself. It ran great and I was very proud of myself, but when I hit 180k I paid to have the timimg belt done :) Take care Robin, good job. Hi Mo Absolutely, for me it was never an option taking it to a guy to install, I really wanted to learn how to do this (also I didnt have the money). So far Ive done just about everything on the car myself and I have learnt so much over the last 2 years and broken a few things too, such as rocker covers, but thats ok, cause the ones I got from SSS automotive were only $10 each and now I get to paint them. Also I didnt trust anyone else to dial in the cams, in hind sight, Im not too sure if I trust myself either!!! And the list is such a fantastic resource of information, if I ever get stuck, thres always someone that has the answer or a cool tuning tip. I cant imagine any mechanic spending a whole day dialing in the cams and tuning the ignition timing, sure he may be faster, but time is money for him. Also, I think Toyota engineered the MK1 engine to be practically impossible to get to, just so that when youre done, you feel that much more appreciative that its working!!! I think the next project is going to be the GZE transplant, in which case Ill have to add an engine crane to my tool collection. But that will probably be in the MK1 race car.
