A little gas = hesitant start, push the foot down a millionth of an inch more and the car launches with much tire squealing. Brian '91 NA - -------------------------------------------------------- More stuff: One interesting point that I am not sure I can explain, deals with how the two cars take off from complete stops. I am talking normal acceleration here, not dropping the clutch at some ridiculous level. The turbo really gives me the feeling of kinda floating forward. Not sure how else to put it. On the other hand, the na feels kinda reluctant. When you give the na some gas, it will really jump but it doesn't quite feel as "smooth" say as the turbo or an mk1. I think this is what makes most people immediately label the na as "a dog". ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 1997 14:29:49 +1000 From: Robin San Subject: MR2 MK1: Ignition timing of TRD cams (was I cant get the dowel pin out) Hi guys Thanks for all the help on the sticky dowel pin, I couldnt get it out, so Ill have to wait till tomorrow for Toyota to get a pair for me. Anyway, I was wondering, now that the cam timing will be 100/98 will the optimum ignition timing change respective to the notches on the crank pulley? Right now Im running about 14DBTDC (on the standard cams) and have found this to be the best. With the 272 cams running at 100/98 what kinda ignition timing should I be looking at? will it still be within the adjustment of the distributor or will I have to skip a tooth on the drive gear? But I really dunno about a supercharger. But I'm sure some of you guys have researched it more than I. I don't know if anyone got 4.5" tips, I considered it, but went with 4.25" instead. Maybe this is the size you really saw. These tips are smaller than the current GREddy exhaust tips, which are 110mm, or 4.33", so it's not anything outrageous. Jeff was kind enough to call me up one day, and I ended up hearing the exhaust over the phone, even though I had already ordered one. I liked the sound, even over the phone, we'll see in person. I'm curious about the differences you heard between 3" and 4.5" Anyway, looking forward to getting mine, even though my car is still in the shop. > As for > the B pipe, we had to finally cut it in half after twenty minutes of trying > to get it out according to the BGB. Greetings, I just happened to be going through my storage boxes and found my old Ferrari book. I thought some might be interested in the Dino history, which was a topic of recent disucssions on the digest. The book states the first street version of the Dino (206GT) appeared in 1968, without Ferrari badging. The car was aimed at the Porsche 911 market, it was styled by Pininfarina, and developed from the "DINO" 206S racer. It had a Fiat built V6 engine. All the Dino's were in fact built by Ferrari, but none carried the prancing horse shield, instead they had a unique 'Dino' badge. Dino himself had little if anything to do with these cars, except sharing his name. He died in 1956 after a long illness, 12 years before the first Dino road car was introduced. Looking at the Dino 206GT (a beautiful car), I am awestruck by how similar it is to the MKII MR2. The same wrap-around rear window, same rear quarter windows, same side intake vents (just a little higher and without the split in the middle), same sculpting in the doors, and of course... a mid-engine. WOW... this really looks like the predecessor to the MKII. The nose is quite different, but other than that the two cars are suspiciously alike. Now I know why I like the MKII shape so much... about 12 years ago I almost took out a second mortgage on my house to buy a gorgeous 1970 Dino from Gentry Lane in Scarborough. They were selling it for $50k Canadian. I absolutely fell in love with that car. There a bad picture here: http://www.resnet.trinity.edu/users/mrobert2/ferrari.htm but it doesn't show the rear end well for good comparison. - -- Phil Cutajar '93 MR2-Turbo, Super White, 74k miles K&N FIPK, MR2-PP MBC mailto:Solo2_MR2@ibm.net my web page:http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/6213/index.htm ICQ #6032611 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 1997 23:54:21 -0500 From: Stephen Gunter Subject: Re: MR2 MK1:4A-G Ignition timing of TRD cams At 02:29 PM 12/22/97 +1000, Robin San wrote: >Hi guys > >Thanks for all the help on the sticky dowel pin, I couldnt get it out, >so Ill have to wait till tomorrow for Toyota to get a pair for me. > > >Anyway, I was wondering, now that the cam timing will be 100/98 will the >optimum ignition timing change respective to the notches on the crank >pulley? I can hear the gears grinding away inside the antenna motor. Any ideas??? I'm at a total loss, I put everything back the way I took it out (I think...) What could this be? Not NFS_2_SE? Just "SE" is the improved version of the old game, "NFS". You want the improved version of "NFS2", right? (which would be "NFS2SE") If not, you'd be downgrading to an older game, no? Geez, I think I'm getting confused with all these abbreviations. Hmm, to make it clearer for all, to date there are: Need For Speed (NFS) Need For Speed SE (NFSSE) Need For Speed 2 (NFS2) Need For Speed 2 SE (NFS2SE) As far as wheel/pedal setups go, I will soon own one. I saw a Best Buy ad today and they have the top-of-the-line Thrustmaster (sold as the "NASCAR" or "F1", depending on where you live...but the same product) on sale for $99.99!!! Only a couple of bucks more than a T2 and much better feel and quality, IMO. I'm also going to start hunting for a 3dfx card companion to utilize all of NFS2SE's capabilities. Any suggestions? I already have a 2mb rage card, I just need the 3dfx chipset. Even paranoids have enemies? :) C'mon - it's about economics, not power. Most people don't say 'I'd really like fast normally aspirated car, know the limitations, and am willing to live with it' (ie: not much bottom end torque, alwaysbeing in high rpm, etc). They say 'I want power'. Simple as that. And if you want power, the easiest way to get reliable, stable and inexpensive power is a factory (if offered) forced induction system. I (as an individual) have never said that normally aspirated power is bad - heck, I like the simplicity of not having all of those air, coolant and lubrication pipes all over the place. Dave S. here in Michingan has an absolutely beautiful '85NA car, with the battery in the front-trunk, and anything that isn't related to power is tossed (*everything*!). It's the first Mk I I've ever seen that actually looked 'clean', and user-friendly to work on. OK, if you want *POWER*, why bang your head against a wall and try to turbo a normally aspirated car? So the Mk I was only offered with SC, and the Mk II with a Turbo, and they each have their limitations inherent to their genre. But, if you want a 4A-GE Turbo or 5S-FE SC, why not start with the forced induction long-block from the same series (4A-GZE Turbo or 3S-GTE SC?) so that you get all of the benefits of the already set-up long-block (low comprssion pistons, better engine cooling and lubrication only).
