Merry Christmas!! Bernie Long '86 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Dec 1997 17:39:26 EST From: Sport Ridr Subject: superleafcharging the MR2 YES!!!! Hey dude, i thought of doing the same thing once, and it worked! Only i put the leaf blower on the passenger seat inside my 350ci V-8 powered 85 S-10 p/u and routed the plumbing (temporarily) out the window and into the engine compartment, (the hood was removed) the plumbing, (a flexible rubber tube found at home depot) was then attached to the 650cfm carb. air cleaner housing. I found that it DOES make a surprising amount of difference, if turned on at higher rpm's. Me and my friends did it as a joke, for fun, one day and it turned out to be a pretty easy way to get more power. I thought i was the only INSANE person that would think of doing something like this, now i feel better. :-) I never thought of doing it to my 86 MR2 but dang, if done right, it would be a great idea! This is what i would do: Attatch the tubing coming from the blower to the stock tube that exits the airbox, if you notice the black plastic tube coming from the metal aircleaner housing, (only on 85-86, cause 87-89 plumbed the tubing through the trunk) has a round rubber hose attached to it on the bottom side, going to a little plastic resevoir. REMOVE the rubber hose from the stock plastic tube, and attach your new hose or pipe to that round inlet hole, that way you havent interupted the regular flow of air to the aircleaner housing. Do not just hook up the blower straight to the throttle body, ALL air must first go through that MAF sensor. Use a regular switch found at radio shack, that only allows power to flow through it when you are pushing it in. That way you could control the time you have the blower on. Wow! This is cool, i think im gonna have to do this too. Yes, i would mount the Leafblower- aka- LeafCharger in the trunk. You'll have to drill a hole through the panel between the trunk and engine compartment to route the new hose to the intake. You might think about putting another tube on the inlet side of the leafcharger and routing it to one side of the trunk so it can get more air. An air cleaner on the blower isnt really needed because you still are using the stock air cleaner. Any questions just ask me. I think its a cool idea, and i just might have to do it too. Just think, there could soon be two Toyota MR-2 LC's running around! Whatch out turbo's here comes the LeafCharger's! :-) Michael Craig 86 MR-2 .......soon...... Someone Gtech the leafblower and get some performance numbers please! It would be cool to hook up an electronic speed control so it would maybe help a little while you're accelerating? Well if that leafblower works half as good as it does.. I'll make a twin-leafcharger system!..or maybe a sequential leafcharger..Man.. I'm thinking maybe I should try the turbo kit from toyomoto.. The guys at altered performance won't sell just the turbo kit.. But apparently has sold/made/installed at least two.. Toyomoto has sold at least 6 (last I checked about 6 months ago)..But the altered performance one includes an aluminum intercooler, the toyomoto does not....In case anyone wanted to know.. I think that a high hp mkii NA would be a cool car. And you can get one, you just can't be in the US, it is called the 3SGE. I can understand where the "I don't want to sell my mkii NA for a turbo" guys are coming from. I love my mki NA, but I still would like more power without a supercharger or Turbo. The idea of a Dave A. 170 hp 4age in a mki is great! But at the same time, I love forced induction cars. I however think that the 170hp non-US 3SGE mkii is a cool car. If you ask these owners however, they loathe us US owners, becasue we have the Turbo version. It is all a matter of how far you want to go. The 4A engine and the 3S engine are great engines, and great platforms with which to build power. As was mentioned before though, the F engine is not a race engine, and can't go to far. The suitablity of both the A and the S engine have been proven in racing. THe 4AGE has gone up to 240hp in its 1.6 L form and the 3SGTe has gone as far a 800hp. The F engine is not a high hp engine, without serious mods. But it can have mods, just not bang for the buck as the 3SGTE engine can have. Re:mki trubo manifold Well after saying how much I like high-hp Na cars, I really want a mki turbo mainfold!! Whoever it was talking about them, let me know! How much? I have a feeling that these things will not be around for long, and if you EVER want a turbo mki NA grab one now! I really like the idea of a small displacement turbo engine! Just thining of the suzuki 1.8 L turbo V-8 drives me crazy! I want one!!!!! Re: electirc superchargers Don't even bother. On the DIY-EFI list this topic was discussed in detail for a while. Alot of education was dragged out of peoples head, as all kinds of formulas and stuff was spit out. By the time it was all said and done, it was real easy to see that they are NOT worth it. You have SERIOUS current draw for very few psi. Many people think that small psi gains are worth it (1-3 psi) but it really isn't. 100k miles: Whooho! I just hit 100k miles last night. I had just downshifted into 3rd to pass a car at 6500rpms as it hit! I love this car! Just these past few weeks I have realized how much we take the 4AGE for granted. Since I was just a youngster in the 80's I didn't pay attention to the fact that most car manufacutres had trouble producing a smooth DOHC 4 cyl back then. The 4AGE for a production car with a high-tech EFI sytem was revolutionary for the time. Most other car maufactures couldn't even come close. Speaking of Matt G. I think that he is no longer on the list. I had posted a "where are you" post a few months back. I know he is still around though. His homepage is: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/8906/ Well I could blab on more, but it is Saturday night, and it is time to party!! I'll talk later....
