I've never driven any MKII MR2, but I've owned two MKI NA's and an SC. The SC is a fantastic, fun car. It's not as fast as a Turbo in a straight line, but I'll bet it's faster down almost any twisty road you could pick. I've had mine 5 years now and I'll never sell it. That's no idle boast, I still have my first car, a '72 Datsun 510 (suitably modded) that I bought in 1978. MR2 freaks are second only to true 510 freaks in the level of their addiction. Not everyone does. I test drove the Turbo and NA cars in early 1990 when they first came out. I did spirited driving in both of them. The conclusions I got from that have not changed after driving my car for 7 years and driving and autoxing the occasional Turbo. The NA is a little slower, but does have good torque. For pulling away at low speeds or out of corners, the NA does very well. At higher rpms, the turbo kicks butt. A lot depends on the type of driving you do and what you get your kicks from. I like torque and cornering ability, even for streets. Most of my driving around town is not that much different from an autox. 8) I can cruise at high speeds as well as the turbo (over 100mph). The only thing I can't do, is accelerate quickly to pass when already at a good speed. For now, I can live with that. If someone out there thinks the NA car they drove is too slow, make sure it is running well. Having said all that..if you are into pure acceleration, the NA car may not be your cup of tea. Unfortunately, > mr2's are not in abundance here in Illinois. Still, If i am not mistaken, > the mkii na is faster than the mki na correct? I have driven the NA MKI and SC MKI. I have also drag raced my NA MKII against the NA MKI. My car was faster and launched quicker than the NA MKI. The SC model would smoke me. Eventually, I would like to SC my MKII if someone figures out how to do it. 8) Randy "Enzo" Chase '91 MR2 NA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 1997 23:52:28 EST From: Sport Ridr Subject: Re: NA/Turbo Comparison Part II hey chris, nice article. The vibration in the brakes at hard braking is warped rotors, having them turned will fix. The stereo is a much less simple answer. It all depends on how much time and money you are willing to put into it. With enough power, (watts) and the right speakers, like Infinity's, you could have a great sounding system. I just built a custom box to fit one 12" sub behind the passenger seat in my MKI, and done so that the passenger seat still has nearly all the room to go completly forward and back. I have infinity's in the dash, and it sounds as good as the car looks. (good) :-) Oh, and the 91 turbo you drove, sounds like the previous owner didnt care much for the car, probably better to pass that one up. Michael Craig beautiful black 86 MKI Also, does anyone know if or how the T-VIS can be altered? I want the secondary butterflies to open around 3500 rpm vs' the now 4500 rpm levle. Can this be done? Have you driven the SC yet? If not, *do it*! You will be assimilated, you will turn to the Dark Side of the Force, etc. It's very fun! The only thing better than a supercharger has got to be a twincharger :) Today I power-slid thru a left turn on yellow. This may be no big deal to some of you, but I'm a mild driver & I'm still being very careful with my MR2, but this was FUN! Actually it was so totally natural I didn't realize it til after I was thru the turn. It slid just exactly like I've always felt your car *should* slide thru a turn, just a little so your rear wheels don't cut too far inside your turning circle. Also not to pick on 5S-FE owners but the SC is easy to upgrade, at least to a certain point. The only down side is you WILL want MORE! :) (Oh and crappy synchros too.) Checking your ignition timing is an easy way verify camshaft timing. The distributor reads off of one camshaft, so if the cam timing is off -- so is the ignition timing -- and no ignition timing adjustment will bring it back into spec. Also, if you pull the upper timing belt cover off, you should be able to rotate the engine a few times and verify if the timing marks line up w/ the cam pulleys etc. Get a BGB. :) - - Jeffrey - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jeffrey Ho See / 1997 really sucks! However, I am considering putting on some 15x6 or 15x7 Freedom Design 7 spoke or similar wheels, and some 195/50 15's. Just need the cash first. :) But the Panasport Pro Rally wheels are pretty nice looking, and they are lighter than the stock wheels, and you feel this in the steering wheel, which by the way is a Momo Monte Carlo which also makes a huge difference in the feel of the car. The only thing with running 205/50 15's is that your speedometer may be out of wack with them. With 195/50 15's, at least your a little closer to the original wheel/tire diamter of the 185/60 14's. Besides, 10mm of tire isn't going to make half the difference in handling and road grip as a properly tuned suspension.
