In the process I found out I'd been quoting the wrong address in my signature the last month or two. I hate ISP's buying each other out. Anyway, a new addition to the pages are a list of companies (including addresses, phone#, fax etc.) that probably are of interest mainly for European owners, as almost all of them are in Europe. If you have more, please email me. Coming up are dyno charts before and after chipping my car this fall, pictures of misc. parts inside my car (finally got that Olympus C-1400L digital camera I've been wanting so long) and more. Take a peek if you like, the address is below. Tonight I was fortunate enough (?) to sit in a Porsche Boxster and the latest Porsche 911 (996), and I still can't figure out what all the fuzz is about. They're fine cars, but at a formidable cost. You have all received a message with basic subscriber information reflecting these changes. There will probably be some bugs and challenges. If anybody has any questions, feel free to E-mail me at zion@hockey.net. I appreciate everybody's patience through this transition. For the benefit of those who weren't on the list a couple of months ago, I volunteered to take ownership of the digest after David requested that he be relieved of it. He and Steve Bagdon have done a marvelous job up until now, and I hope that I can fill their shoes with a minimal of technical challenges (I've already crashed the mail server-*hard* DOH!). We also voted on the funding the list should have-either supported with private or commercial money-and we opted for a "Public Television" approach. What this means is that the list is free, but people may voluntarily donate money for bandwidth used. With the move of the digest to the new ISP (www.hockey.net), bandwidth usage through January '98 will be provided by yours truly. For those interested in contributing monetarily, here's what to do: Make out checks/money orders to Hockey.net. and mail to me at: Andrew P. Tasi 7333 Gallagher Drive Apt 132d Edina, MN 55435 If you prefer to pay by credit card, send me the number with expiration date, name as it appears on the card, and the amount you wish to have charged. If you'd prefer not to have your name mentioned, specify that. Thank You. Lastly, a big Thank You to Mark Steiger, owner of Hockey.net, without whom this would not be happening. Once inside of Atlantic City, take Atlantic Avenue (a major north/south drag just 2 blocks from the Boardwalk) all the way to the northern extreme (this means the Atlantic Ocean is on your right driving up Pacific Avenue, for all you "directionally challenged" drivers). Follow Pacific Avenue to the end where it bears around to the left. Now the inlet is alongside your right, and you are also looking at the very end of the Boardwalk. This isn't a bad area anymore, and there is plenty of parking parallel to the Boardwalk. Head down through the southern part of A.C., and do a sight-seeing drive through Margate, and Ventnor. Drive through an interesting section of primo real estate in Longport, and wind up at "The Point", the southern-most tip of the island. There is another parking area there. Get out of cars and enjoy the scenery! > >5) 1:00 PM Head back up to Atlantic City for lunch. We can eat at the best submarine/hoagie/zeppelin place in the world (White House Subs) which I heartily recommend. It is a world-famous place, and there are hundreds of autographed photos of famous stars and celebrities eating there hanging on the walls. We can also eat at Tony's Baltimore Bar & Grill, which is a sort of inexpensive "neighborhood" Italian place that has also been there for a million years. Roxanne and I will scope out parking for both places. > >6) 3:00 PM At this point, we can park at a casino hotel and take a walk on the Boardwalk (maybe to the new Steel Pier?), gamble if you want, or if you prefer a "quieter" casino to gamble in, go back to the Inlet and go to Harrah's Marina Casino & Hotel. Some of us aren't gamblers, so going to a casino parking lot on the Boardwalk might be best. Parking at all of the A.C. casinos costs only $2.00 per day, and if you pay for one, you are covered for all of the rest of them if you keep your receipt (the $2.00 is a city fee, not a casino fee). > > > So how does this sound to you, Chris? Headlights and window seals I've recently developed a problem with my headlights, and am wondering if this a common occurance, or if my car is some kind of anomaly. I was driving down a very dark section of highway when all of a sudden my lights went out. Just the headlights. Tail lights, parking lights, and interior lights all stayed on. I basically punched the light switch and they came back on (I felt like the Fonz), only to have them do the same thing about 30 minutes later, and then it became more and more frequent, until I had to resort to jamming a casette tape between the high beam lever and the other light switch (the hi-beams would work when I held them back in the flash position, but not when I pushed it forward). I ripped the thing apart, cleaned out the light mechanism ( I thought it may have been the contacts), and then discovered that the harness wiggled, and it seemed to maybe lose contact with certain contacts in the light mechanism. I've now resorted to duct tape, but am in search of a more permanent fix. ANybody else run across this? Secondly, the seals around my windows are getting increasingly noisier (meaning they are letting air in, not squeaking). Is this something that I can do, or can be done, or should I just deal with it. The car hasn't been wrecked, so it's not a mis-alignment problem. I think they're just old. Sorry to ramble on and on. I am of the Matt Gawlowski school of thought on the 5SFE: The engine was purposely detuned to make sure there was a significant difference between the turbo and the n/a. Todays 4 cylinder engines produce more hp per liter than the 5SFE. I believe that Toyota did something simple to de-tune the engine and that he who discovers this will unlock the power. I personally believe that the secret is the cams and I may have the inside track on someone who can build new cams for the engine. As I eluded to in my last message I believe Patrick is working on fitting a paxton supercharger to his n/a. and if he is not I will. I am not looking for a higher top speed, the gear ratios have sealed my fate on that: (I've been to 124mph and my rpm was near redline.) I am more intrested in how fast I get there. I am more interested in torque than horsepower. A turbo is too much trouble. I'd much rather have a supercharger, better torque, less spool up time and no baking oil. With the Paxton I have only two questions: Does my engine turn the right direction and who can make the bracket, and I already know who can make the bracket. I also have access to two old masters of the automobile (any automobile) so it would be unwise to underestimate my resources. I also have one other thing that, apperently, some others do not--- patients. If you have the skills and time to swap engines then more power to you, but as is common with me, I prefer the path less traveled. Subject: Re: 5SFE Stuff I finally got my '93NA registered on Monday so I've been driving it this week, and I don't see why folks are complaining about the 5SFE. I've owned both '94 and '91 turbos (still have the '91), and I don't think the NA gives up that much to a stock turbo. With 65 fewer horses and 55 fewer ft-lbs torque I thought it would feel like a dog, but it isn't bad. The low gearing allows it to launch very well, and I can easily get wheelspin in 1st gear even with competition tires on the car. People have complained that it runs out of breath at high rpms, but mine seems to pull strongly up to at least 5500 rpm. It feels a lot stronger than 135 hp to me. You don't get that sudden rush of power that the turbo gets, but the power is more than adequate for most street driving. I would bet that the NA's 0-40 times are really close to the turbo's. The engine's a lot noisier than the turbo, though, but I like the way it sounds. I bet an open air filter would sound really good (but noisy). Someone mentioned that the engine was probably de-tuned. I don't think it was detuned, but it was tuned more for low end torque than peaky horsepower. My Honda/Acura products were/are dogs at low rpm but lots of fun up high. Look at the Integra specs -- incredible horsepower for the engine size, but torque is pretty low. In my NA I can lug it around at under 2000 rpm and then floor it and it doesn't bog like a Honda, it just pulls smoothly. Realize that this engine was designed mainly for the Camry. If you were designing an engine for a family sedan (and we're not talking a Euro sport sedan) what would the priorities be? Probably broad torque band, smoothness, reliability, and economy. The MR2's 5SFE doesn't have the balance shaft that the Camry does, so it's not quite as smooth, but everything else is the same. Still, I think that improving the engine's breathing with intake, headers, exhaust, and some head work would do a lot toward realize its potential. Might also need a computer reprogram to make the best use of these mods. If I ever decide to build this car into an ITS car, I'll probably do some of this stuff. Cams have to stay stock, though.
