I am working on a project, and need a basic line drawing, prefer side view showing air vent, or 3/4 profile of a first generation MR2. Nothing fancy or too detailed, just a basic block outline to use as a guideline to make a stencil. I couldn't find one in my brand new Haynes (Thank You Arlyn and Strano!!) so I throw myself upon the mercy of the list yet again. I can read jpegs, bitmaps, giffs, wmfs, whatever, USUALLY unless aohell gets frisky, or I can DL from a website if you'll point me in the right direction. Thanks! I would think that the engine would require more than 87 octane, but my owners manual clearly states that 87 is enough. That leads to 2 ideas for the "secret power". 1 - I tend to think the cams are strangling the engine. 2. My other idea is so simple I am afraid to try it. What if you just advanced the ignition timing a few degrees? 135 HP from a 2.2 Liter 16 Valve 9.5:1 CR engine is just not very good! There has to be more! The 3SGE Idea: These engines are available <$1,000 from late 80s Celicas in the US. However, Chiltons has them listed at 120 HP. What changed between then and the current 3SGE? I think he said max 13.. it's normally ten. But in the manual it tells ya to connect two connectors somewhere I think when you don't the timing can fluctuate between 10 and 19 or something like that. Anyway I been wanting to for awhile.. I think I'll get a light 2morrow an try it an let y'all know. I called Mr2PP and asked about the cams they carry and they said you'd get a gain of about 20hp depending on your mods.. So I am assuming 20 max with ntake/exhaust. I would like to thank everyone for the concern, but I am fine. Not a scratch on me, just a little glass thrown on me. The car was hauled off today to a shop down here in Mesa, AZ. My insurance company has been great and they seem to be willing to do whatever I want. I'll find out on Monday what the estimated time and cost of repairs will be. I am pretty sure they will repair it, as the only visible damage is/are ground effects, bumper, passenger side quarter panel, passenger side door, windshield, and strip around the windshield. It also threw it out of alignment and left fur in my window and between my tire and wheel.. The interior will need a quality cleaning to remove all the glass. The more I thiink about it, it isn't as bad as it sounds. I drove it 120 miles after the accident and only had slight rubbing on the front passenger side tire. The Taurus behind me was probably a total loss. The whole front of the car was damaged, and was undriveable. I really think, if I would have been in almost anything else, I would have been dead. I had about 2 seconds to decide if I should hit one head on, or clip one with the right and run over the one laying down. My TRD suspension definately helped me put the car where I wanted it. But, enough rambling. Sorry I can't respond to everyone , but I appreciate the email and the get-well wishes. - -Matt ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 97 22:40:44 -0000 From: Subject: If you must know... PS- The first one who saw me and made a U-Turn, so I beat him to the punch, pulling over immediately, waiting for him along the side of the road, so as to rob him of the satisfaction of hitting me with his blue and red lights. Very quickly, I got the insurance, registration and my drivers license together, so as to rob him of being able to ask me for them. I then popped the engine compartment and stood along side the car with the driver's door opened. Leaning on the side of my car, looking into my engine compartment as he lazily arrived. The first thing I said to him, before he had the chance to say anything was: "You know? A lot of people don't stop for you guys anymore, but I say... why make life difficult?" Then, I handed him the the stuff that he would have asked me for, and asked him if I could borrow a paper towel. "I need a paper towel." Heh. They always carry paper towels. Eyes narrow, looking me up one side and down the other, he handed me a paper towel. "Here's your paper towel." He caught me on my way home, about 30 miles downrange of the endpoint of my wild canyon run. He then said: "How'd-gee getche yer cutzie lil' car so dirty?" baiting me, talking to me as if I was a three year old. I retorted that, actually, you have to be pretty trim to drive one of these, and that it's unfortunate that lot of people are just too fat to fit in something like this, relegating them to a life of having to drive cumbersome mid-sized vehicles, while glancing down to visually direct my statement to the enormous spare tyre that developed around that mid-section of his. His eyes narrowed, as if I just inflicted pain upon him. In a round-about way, I then introduced the officer to the theroy of bureaucratic behavior, and told him of the underpinnings of the ramifications of his actions, and highlighted an example that amplified my point quite well. By then a couple other CHP units arrived, looked me up one side and down the other without saying a word as the two of us continued to bicker. One of the other officers then told me to shut up, and "stand over there" by my car. "Fine, but it's not my fault, these concepts didn't just appear out of thin air... it's all because of you," Heh! Then, I shut my trap, pulled out my dipstick, and checked the oil, whistling a happy tune. "Sir, I didn't tell you to check your oil," but he didn't know that the original officer told me I could. "He just said I could. See?" showing them the paper towel. The other officers took a good look at my car. I heard one of them whispering to the other: "It's got a supercharger." Brilliant deduction (!), being that the word 'supercharger' is hung-out on the Mk I like independence day. Then, the guy writing the ticket shouted to me to close my driver's side door. I then asked him if he wanted me to shut up and stand right here, or close the door. The other guy then said: "SHUT UP, CLOSE THE DOOR AND THEN STAND OVER THERE, SIR," also becoming a little uptight. The third officer then said to close my door, else a passing car might take it off, and then he would have to write me up for that, as well. "They're not going to hit the door. You could see that open door from the effing space shuttle," said I. "By then it would be too late," a poor attempt at a comeback. We then went into a " will not-will too" volley a few times until I said "Will too" eight times or so in rapid succession. The third officer then became frustrated, and told me to shut-up or I would be arrested. Right then, a car went by, whoosh, missing my open door, and then I said "told you so." They were REALLY irritated by then, telling me to shut up, shut the door, then stand over here or I would go to jail. "Fine, but you guys were the ones who started it." They finally came up with 75 in a 55 before cutting me loose. Actually, I was doing 95, but perhaps I was quicker on the brakes than he was on the radar button. But, after I left, one of them followed me, a 100 feet off my bumper for a long way, thereafter, trying to make me nervous. But, they didn't know that I'm a rascal. I subtly modulated my speed to fatigue him. 45, 50, 55, 60, then 60, 55, 50, 45... over, and over, and over. He finally pulled out and passed, gave me a dirty look, too. I waved to him, smiling. No hard feelings for me, at least until the courtesy notice comes. They laugh last, all right, all the way to the bank, but at least I laugh now. However, there's nothing worse than having to drive 55 after spending a good part of the day at 4.5 to 5.5K in 5th... I badly need a jammer. -ASJ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 97 22:40:31 -0000 From: Subject: A Holiday Season Odyssey- Dear Digest, The long semester finally took its toll. I had to miss the last two IMOC Rallies, on account of the semester. Rallye deprivation... and I snapped. I'm only human. I went and did something rash. Temporary insanity. I went on recon, yesterday... in great style; in a big way. As a result, my SC is pulverized with dirt and mud like never before. My, oh-my. My once spotless engine compartment? Mud. My once emaculate under-carriage? Mud. My wheel-whels? Caked with mud three millimeters thick. Heh! Must have been that stream. When I pulled in last night my wife said: "My God. What did you do to that poor car, Sam? You just washed it yesterday!" "100 miles... in cyclical transition, babe... between maximum tyre adhesion... and maximum tortional side-slip... babe" as closely to Mac-the-Knife as I could muster but failing miserably. She wasn't too crazy about my traffic ticket, either. But what a day. I went hammer and tongs with a hyperfast Trans Am, 3000 GT Mitsu's, and a lone cafe racer, Black and white Chevrolet Caprice's (heh heh), and got myself into rip-roaring bickerment with the CHP! What a day. I took a spirited romp through perhaps some of the most remote (very remote), and arguably the fastest, most demanding series of canyon roads in North America: an agglomeration of 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear sweepers that run for some one-hundred semi-consecutive miles. It's real fast. On the final leg, you freewheel through the sweepers in 5th, scrubbing off revs, then you bang it into 4th on the exit, rev her until there's nothing left, slam it up to 5th for a bit more, then into the next turn where you hold the hammer down flat, scrub off the revs again, banging back into 4th.... over, and over, and over, and over, for endless miles, glancing down upon the clouds overlying California's GCV between those hyperfast, brutal sweepers. My oh my, what fun. About mid-way through my odyssey, one particular right-hand kink is normally taken flat-out just after cresting a rise on the approach to it that conceals sight of the apex. It's a snick, up to 4th just before you crest that rise, where the car then gets a little bit light, so it requires a delicate touch in committing to the apex of an otherwise uneventful right-hand kink, hammer still down, accelerating all the way through. A simple, delicate, minute steering input. But this time, as the apex appeared into view as I crested the rise, establishing sight of the apex... a stream. Heh! Mother nature put a stream right in the middle of that apex, going right across the road... A moment in time and space; that sinking feeling when you know you're in trouble. Heh! I hit that stream, and, yippee-ky-yeah, wild-wild-west, the back end got happy... came around on me like a sprint car... Damned near lost it. Screwed up my entrance to the next turn, too. But, I came up grinning again (except for the mud). I took the bra off this morning (Thursday). You can see a distinct line where the bra once was that indicates what color the car actually is. I suppose I've got a week solid (at least) of detailing to do to get it back to where it once was, but: with the in-laws coming next week, perfect timing! Anyway, I've got a Christmas to get ready for, so ends my year, on the net, and otherwise. I'm shutting down the old computer for the year, so don't bother replying: I'm gonna have some fun (sans terse replies from electronic sources). But, let me take care of 1997 business with this last post of the year by saying: "beer's to you, amigos, here's hoping that Santa brings all of you lots of TRD goodies. Here's wishing a very Merry Christmas to you and yours, and my sincerest wishes for a terrific holiday season for everyone on the MR2 digest. Merry Christmas to everyone." Signing-off for '97, Sammy Joseph, Filthyest MR2 in North America- PS- Hang in there. I'll post the results of the fuel consumption survey around the 1st of the year. Can't do it till my professor peer-reviews the hard data. But, here's some blood and guts from my odyssey to tide you over: ************************************************ TRIP DATA: Accumulated: 328 miles Consumption: 22.533 gallons, pump 92 octane. ************************************************ SIGHTS AND SOUNDS FOR THE DIARY: * Mitsubitshi 3000 GTs, Several of them- Nose to tail, going hammer and tongs the opposite way. I would have done a U-turn, and run them down, but I was only 5 miles or so into my run, and theirs looked to be ending. Too bad. * A Brand New SL Mercedes! A female passenger. Altered his behavior when I appeared in his mirrors. He attempted to quicken his pace. The passenger immediately took interest, looking back over her shoulder several times. I was unable to match his acceleration down the straightaways, and through the passing zone, forcing me to take him over the double yellow in a breaking area. When he realized what I was doing, he also crossed over the double yellow to pinch me into the shoulder, but it was too late and I was by. That guy was more interested in impeding my progress than enjoying a spirited drive. However, it was obvious that he was not yet familiar with the performance aspects of his new car. After the first two turns with me out in front, he aborted any attempt to stay with me... A Merc for Breakfast; a pathetic one at that. * A Motorcycle (Cafe Racer)! Doing the same thing I was doing, just having fun. From a distance, I saw him blow by that Merc like it was standing still. Nice leathers. However, he did the same thing as the guy in the Merc: First, he altered his pace. Once the gap between us finally closed, he became fatigued, gave me a thumbs up, and let me by. He initially relegated himself to my rear bumper, but dropped back about a minute later, after a procession of 3rd and 4th gear transitions, and he gave up the ghost... a side-order of Honda, thank you very much. * An Old Trans Am! A modified Firebird (Like an IROC-Z). Looked like he had a shift-kit. And, this guy had some big huevos. He wrung that thing for all it was worth. Real clean lines, except for a couple mistakes. He saw me coming, tried to maintain the shrinking interval, but... he wasn't fatigued in the least when I reeled him in. As I closed the distance to about 100 feet, he early-apexed a turn, and went high into a fast left hander, but saved it as I moved inside and around him, only to have him lay waste to me down the very next straight, putting down rubber on his upshift. His V-8 wailing bye, the guy glanced over his shoulder as he passed me, grinning ear to ear not an attosecond after his near disaster. This guy was just plain happy to have found someone to race with! Two cars with nothing in common; two drivers with everything in common. Racing in its purest, most innocent form. The gap kept fluctuating. The longer the straight, the wider the gap, but by the end of every turn, there I was all over him, only to see him walk away, putting down rubber every time. He made me work. But, his car just wasn't as good as he was. My second time around him was the last, as I got inside him again. With me in front, and him rapidly closing on me down on the next short straight, we went through into a turn, but its apex was sanded. As I exited and glanced in the mirror, I saw the Firebird bobble. The front tyres losing, then reestablishing grip just as the back tyres lost grip, reestablish traction with no other effect but hyperinflating that poor driver's cardiac rate. I know exactly what that feels like. I'll bet he butt-puckered his seat. "Color me gone," my inner voice rejoiced, and I really put the hammer down to extend the advantage, because I knew he had to have butterflys from that bobble. I would have. I am all too familiar with that feeling. It's so humbling. Awful. Thereafter, he dropped back forever, me thinking that my MR2 flambayed a Firebird a la Trans Am for lunch. That guy fought me for every piece of asphalt. He fought me fair, too. I don't know what he did to that car: It was so fast in the straights, busting loose those big rear tyres on every shift, but it was so cumbersome in the turns. It either pushed, or it was loose. I'm sick and tired of being dusted in the straightaways, but, I've come to appreciate the benefits of a nutral car. That's the most fun I've had since IMOC's Malibu Rally... * Grand Am (Rental car?)- A traveling salesman type, taking the long way. I surprised him by suddenly appearing, and braking hard in his rear view mirrors. He substantially altered his behavior, increasing his pace, and began driving erratically, attempting in vain to extend an interval, stuff flying around in his car, his suit-jacket on a coat hanger behind him flopping around. Like the merc, he applied full throttle down a short straightaway when I pulled out, in order to lenghten the distance of my passing attempt, forcing me to take him on the high side of the next turn. Once passed, he initially tried to keep pace, but later seemed happy to resume his previous pace, dissappearing quickly out of my mirrors... good riddens. * 3 Chevrolet Impalas- All three: Black on White; blue and red lights; Shotguns; Motorola... A story in itself... ************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 1997 01:54:49 -0500 From: "Armando J.
