Date: Wed, 17 Jan 96 09:44:00 EST Subject: RedLine Oil Question Does anyone know the difference between RedLine's 75W-90NS and MT-90 oils? I have RedLine's brochure and it says that they are both 75W-90 gear oils designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. My owner's manual says that I can use 75W-90 gear oil with a GL-3, GL-4, or GL-5 rating for the transaxle, and I'm wondering which of these two oils is a better choice for me. The RedLine brochure seems to imply that MT-90 allows easier shifting and gives GL-4 protection. I think that 75W-90NS is GL-5 rated, but it doesn't say. It has been making this gulping sound from the engine compartment around 3000 RPM, just when the Turbo comes on... There is a loss of power associated with it. Anyway ideas...I brought it to the dealer, and they said that they could not here it. 6 of my friends could here it just fine. I also wanted them to check out the CD Player which would only accept certain disks....they thought that was fine too... Anyway ideas what the gulping sound could be>? Thanks... Does anybody know what effect disconnecting the Oxy sensor will have on power/economy?? I ran diagnostics on the ECU, and got 5 flashes ie Oxy sensor, also cleared it and ran the car for a week, and got the same error code. I tried testing the sensor with a voltmeter, as explained in Rick Kirchhof's article on Oxy sensors. I was only getting steady about .02 volts, which jumped to about .5 if I revved the engine. Unexpected results, so I imagine the sensor *is* faulty. Toyota here (New Zealand) don't list an Oxy Sensor as a part, ie the New Zealand new vehicles didn't have them. Mine is an import from Japan. The guy at Toyota said that some people in NZ just disconnect it. He didn't know exactly what effect this would have, just that he heard that was what some people did. We don't have strict emission standards in NZ, is the Oxy sensor really only needed for critical/precise mixture control?? When I called them, they said that this was using 92 octane pump gas and lots of Greddy Upgrades/Parts, including an additional injector and a larger turbo. Anybody know about this? It just seems so exaggerated!!! Any thing I should especially look out for when buying a used 91-93 MR2? Pump >voltage is a constant 14.4 v regardless of load or rpm. > NO you are wrong here. The ECU has an output that controls a relay which connects or disconnects a resistor in series with the 12 V supply to the fuel pump. This resistor will make the pump run at tow speeds depending on the fuel requirements of the engine...see electrical manual of MR2.(Relay F1 fuel pump relay coil controlled from pin FPR 6A on 1993 elect diagram page 59. This relay will connect F2 fuel pump resistor in/out in series with the pump F4 supply voltage...and basic electrical experience if a resistor is in series with a load it limits current flow...on DC motors at least) - ---------------------------------- I do not disagree here Now also the fuel pressure regulator does exactly what I proposed. It controls the fuel pressure in proportion to the pressure in the plenum, being it vacuum or boost where the ECU controls the duration that the injectors are open. ___________ ________________ ________ __ ___/__ | / /__< /___ __ )___ __/ _____ \ __ | / / __ / __ __ |__ / ____/ / __ |/ / _ / _ /_/ / _ / /____/ _____/ /_/ /_____/ /_/ (Kostas G. They are not the vision plus, I guess (I don't remember the name of the other type). I also use stock wiring to light up the 90/135W Ion Crystal PIAA H4 bulbs which is okay up to now. I didn't get a chance to put on the custom wiring harness (from IPF), but I suppose, the custom harness will make the headlights somewhat brighter and I run less chance of the stock wiring getting hot. However, if you want to run 100/170W IPF H4 bulbs (which my Land Cruiser uses), it's mandatory to use custom wiring harness. They want to know if it will have a mass market. They determine that with focus groups with ordinary people. Now Lexus, conceivably, might be interested in knowing that relatively small numbers of people would buy an MR2 for $50K or a Turbo Supra for $60K from them. But I don't know how to "write" to them either. I was glad to extend the mr2 list to the "new" MR2's in 1991, but from the looks of it, postings about cars with more than two seats or with other than engines in the middle will not be welcome as far as I am concerned. ------------------------------ From: uunet!aol.com!NetMutt Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 18:21:26 -0500 Subject: Re: mr2-digest V1 #88 I see that Gerald San Agustin seems to be rather knowledgable in the ways of the 91 MR2 Turbo. I pose this question to you. I recently installed a Greddy Airinx filtercharger, exhaust and boost guage. I noticed that stock max boost was about .5 bars, after the two mods, max boost went up to about .7 bars. My question is this: My next mod was to add the Greddy TVVC so I could crank up the boost :) But.... After I installed it and turned it all the way down, it would crank up over the max allowed by the fuel cut :( - so as you can imagine..... just as I'm about to say bye bye to a corvette ( or any other american would be sports car ) *bang* brick wall no boost allowed until I shut the car off for a few seconds and let the computer reset. by just adding this TVVC is that causing enough restriction to do this?? Can I lower the amount of restriction by shortening the hoses connecting the compressor housing to the TVVC and the TVVC to the waste gate actuator?? HELP!!! I opened the door, played around with what I could reach, and got the window to close, albeit with much grinding and mechanical distress. I assume that the little plastic gear which was being discussed earlier has died. However, the entire powered mechanism seems firmly embedded in the middle of a welded door. How can I get the motor assembly out to fool with, and what is the status(if any) of the replacement gears I seem to recall someone was planning to make? I screwed up big time last night and had an accident in the Toyota. I was driving back from my parents house last night about 10pm after it had drizzled enough to coat the streets with a nice, slick sheet of water and oil. I was driving about 45 mph and came across an intersection that had a dip on the other side. As I crossed the intersection, the suspension slightly release and when it recompressed, the tires lost traction and I started spinning. I spun to the other side of the street and hit the curb sideways. I then went right up the gidewire and back into the telephone pole and then flying in the air about 30ft before landing on the rear section of the car. That's right, I was trying to fly without a propeller. I spend most of the rest of the night in the hospital and finally made it hime about 1 am. I had to get my work id out of the car so I got to look and see what had happened. The entire trunk is pushed up and you can see the mangled suspension parts underneath. The front right side suspension has been ripped out from the car. I will be going back to look at the car with a camera and getting my stuff out of the car on Friday or Saturday. Kind of a crappy way to start out the year.
