This was very expensive and I was a little dissapointed. I am supposed to have 178 horses now. The mid range acceleration is noticeable but nothing on the low end. What do I need to do to get a little more oomph at the low end. I have heard everything from change the computer to polish and port the head. I want a little more kick but don't want to play to much with reliability. THANX. Is there an aftermarket computer chip available for it? I've heard nothing about them mentioned since I've owned the car. Also, someone mentioned how their MR2 was noticeably faster when it was very cold outside (I've noticed a difference too)...I've already designed something to lower intake air as low as I want (theoretically...hasn't been road tested yet)...but I'm wondering about icing in the throttle body - does anyone think this could be a serious problem? How cold could the intake air be before icing is a problem? How much more power do you think this'll give me? Maybe 5 hp (or am I dreaming here)? I'm considering an HKS EVC III to raise the boost a bit, probably only consistantly to the factory max of 11.8 for now. Do I need one of these adjustable pop-off valves or an HKS blow off valve? I see there are three types, standard, race and Super blow off valves. What makes sense for my commuter rig that I occasionally run on track days??? Date: Thu, 28 Dec 95 09:27:00 EST Subject: Oil Filters Regarding the proper oil filters for the 3SGTE, there was a thread a couple of months ago about this. Apparently, the previous filter has been replaced with a shorter one. It is confusing because the applicability listed on the box seems to contradict what the dealer's listings currently recommend. My parts guy recommended the longer filter for the turbo engine, even though it has been replaced by the new shorter one. He had some of the old longer filters in stock so I bought a few of them. I don't recall the part numbers. BTW, I think the new short filter is also used on the 5S engines. Apparently, the only difference is the length of the filter. They both fit fine, so I'd go with the longer one if you can still get them. They should provide a little better filtering capacity, perhaps less backpressure, and maybe a little (but probably insignificant) extra oil cooling. Date: Thu, 28 Dec 95 09:45:00 EST Subject: MKII Headlight Conversions For those of you who want to improve your MkII's headlights, check out the MR2 Performance Products page which you can get to from the MR2 WWW page. It shows some Hella headlight replacements which can accept halogen bulbs of various wattages. I think the 55/100 watt bulbs would be a good choice since the 55W low beams are still legal and won't blind people and the 100 watt high beams will give you a vast improvement. Brad Burns '94T ------------------------------ From: "Burns, James B." Date: Thu, 28 Dec 95 09:39:00 EST Subject: Cold weather performance Recently, some on this list have commented on the improved performance of the turbo engine during cold weather. This would make sense since the colder air is more dense, but my turbo seems to provide less boost and slower spool-up during cold weather which causes performance to suffer. I heard once that it is designed to provide less boost during cold temperatures in order to prevent an overpressure condition. Can anyone confirm this? Also, regarding using the heater to reduce coolant temperatures, my temperature gage stays rock steady at just below half-way no matter what (after it's warmed up, of course). I can be running the heater at full blast on a cold day or have the AC blasting on a 100 degree day in the mountains and it stays at the same steady temperature. Thanks in advance. > Buy the factory O-rings. From what I was told, they are made different from standard O-Rings. They are sorta inexpensive so I wouldn't try anything else. By the way, ALWAYS change them when removing the injectors (this is what is said in the factory manual but did I listen......). I made the mistake of reusing a set since I only used them just under a thousand miles. I guess once they're compressed into the fuel rail once, they get molded into the injector. When I reinserted them, they seemed fine, until I fired it up and fuel started seeping out of injector #1. Not a good thing (it smelled too!!). Anyways, removing a fuel rail on a 4AGZE is no fun, not to mention the danger of leaking fuel on a hot exhaust . Also, a fire extinguisher is highly recommended on any vehicle the has been modified in any way. Gerald San Agustin 88 Twincharger Cyber Racing, So Cal. I suggest taking it apart and spraying everything with carb cleaner. Then test its operation with a vacuum pump. If everything checks out ok and still you get an error, it could be a cracked tube or aa faulty EGR temperature sensor. It show the NA with a lateral acceleration of .85g. The supercharged has a .92. The only difference I can see is a wider rim, 6 inches instead of 5.5 and a "sperical joint-type stablizer bar" on the rear. Did the NA come with a rear sway bar or not? Can I grab a bar off of a SC or should I just get a aftermarket? I also picked up the '85 brochure, nice big brochure! It shows the only way to get AC was to get the climate control package, which you couldn't get in '89. What year did Toyota stop offering the climate control? I guess I'm going to have to track down the other sales brochures. One last question, now that I have found a sales brochure the one thing I'm missing for my car is the window sticker. Any idea who to call at Toyota so I could get a copy? I know this sounds a little odd, but what the heck. First, on both cars but more pronounced on the Turbo was a strange grinding noise as I started them up. Both started easily, but they made what sounds like a bearing grinding or something like that (I wish I could give a better description!). The other question is that the '91 seemed to loose all boost about halfway through the testdrive. The saleslady was clueless ("Uhhhh, like what's a wastegate?"). At first I felt boost kick in around 3000 rpm and noted that the boost gauge was working, and then later on the boost gauge was totally unresponsive and didn't really notice any boost from 3-6000 rpm. Also, while sitting still and just revving the engine to 4-5000 rpm the gauge still sat on the "-". Should the boost gauge show presssure while just revving it? And is the boost that noticeable while driving, or was I just imagining it the first few times? I'd love to hear what some of the Turbo owners have to say. If I can get a satisfactory response from the dealer or helpful advice from list members, I'd like to close the deal on the Turbo this weekend! :) tia, Dave - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "640K ought to be enough for anybody." -- Bill Gates, 1981 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.coil.com/~bigd/ ------------------------------ From: uunet!aol.com!Dan22378 Date: Thu, 28 Dec 1995 15:56:27 -0500 Subject: Stickers To all interested in stickers the winners is Paul Thomas's design.
