Reply-To: scott_maclean@arthor.cais.com (Scott Maclean) Today while driving near Tyson's Corner in Virginia, I spotted a white MKII. Not completely odd, except this one had NO rear spoiler on it at all! I had a look, and it definitely did not look like it had been taken off - it simply looked like it had never had one at all. Looked rather like a Del Sol, actually. Anyone else ever seen a MKII without a spoiler? Scott MacLean CASMEL-I Artificial Horizons BBS arthor@cais.com Aviation! In the UK at least we don't get the Turbos. The newer spec'd MR2 has the 173bhp NA 2.0L engine whilse the older one had a 2.0L 140-150 (?) bhp engine. I know they also did a lower spec car (without rear spoiler) which had a less powerful engine again - this may have been a 1.8L, not sure. I know the Swiss can buy Turbos, but there doesn't seem to be many more European countries that sell them. In the UK I'd say it's probably down to cost. A new MR2 2.0L NA (173bhp) costs UKP23,000 + 500 on the road. If you add a CD player it takes the overall cost to UKP23,900 (approx US$37,000!!!). OK you can deal a little on the price but all the same UK MR2s are vastly overpriced. I'm wondering if this is common to the t-top model (where the doors are more stressed) or did mine just happen to get two identical dings on both doors? Has anyone noticed this on their MKIIs? Also, there has been much discussion about the leaky t-tops. Mine has been garaged until this fall and has never leaked. I think that garaging and proper care (Armor All, etc) of the seals helps to avoid the problem. There are no European MR2 Turbos! At least not officially, all are either imported or built from NA MR2s. But the Celica All-trac has the same 3S-GTE engine, which had 204hp and ~203 lbft from 1990 to 1993, 242hp and 223 lbft from 1994 to present. Not that these are DIN figures, yours SAE, so the 204hp DIN is actually the same as the 200hp SAE. Then again, there aren't supposed to be any European Carina GT-T's either - but somehow, there are about 10 in Finland only ;) - -- Matti Kalalahti | Toyota Carina Coupe GT-T TwinCam Turbo '82 k124476@ee.tut.fi | RWD * IRS * 3T-GTEU * 195+-15hp@4200-6700rpm A Huge Evergrowing WWW Home Page * http://proffa.cc.tut.fi/~k124476/ ------------------------------ From: uunet!netrunner.net!hkphoto (howard kuflik) Date: Mon, 18 Dec 1995 19:00:45 -0500 Subject: cold starts? The book is called "how to tune and modify bosch fuel injection," by Ben Watson (motorbooks international, Osceola WI) and can probably be found in most book stores (I've NO STAKE in this book). It gives excellent descriptions and trouble shooting for FI systems. Since the car starts, you can rule out a problem with the cold start injector itself. However, teh CS injector could be switched on for too long, making the car run much too rich at startup. This is rare, but easily tested. Immediatly after starting, pull the cold start injector's wires off and see if the car runs ok. This will probably have nothing to do with it, but is worth checking. The most likely problem is a doo-hickey called the auxilliary airflow meter. To quote the book "the aux air valve is used to allow air to bypass the throttle plates while the engine is warming uip to perit a higher idle speed. The valve consists of an electrically heated bimetal valve. When the engine is first started the valve will be open. As the engine runs, the bimetal valve is heated by the electric element, slowly closing off the aus air by pass and reducing the volume of air entering the engine. Reducing the air in turn reduces the idle speed." "testing the aux air valve can be done in two ways. The first is a functional test. To begin, start the engine cold.. if the engine speed slows over a period of 2 -3 mins, the valve is OK. If there is no change in the speed the engine runs at, remove the valve and inspect to see if the passage is closed. If the engine has been run for several minutes (warm) the passage should be closed. If the passage is open, ensure that there is power and a good groun on the harness to the aus air valve. If there is, replace the valve. " Check this out.
