I had to switch to some really thin trannie fluid (75W90) before things went back to normal. Unfortunately, they didn't. Seems it grinds on 3rd every time I shift into it when it's around 3-4000 RPM. I think it's the synchro, cuz it doesn't really grind when I shift into it when it's 1500-2000 RPM. So, finally, has anyone ever had to replace their synchro springs on the MkI? Anything tricky to watch out for? If not, does anyone know where I can order a Haynes Repair Manual for an '86 MkI? It saddens me that I must go 'softly' on my MR2. On cold starts, the engine will jump up in RPM's, stay there for several minutes, and slowly work it's way down to idle at about 900 rpm. In the summer, the RPM's jump to about 1400 and it takes five minutes for the car to idle; in the winter the RPM's jump to 2500 RPM and take ten to fifteen minutes for the car to idle! By cold start, I haven't driven the car for several hours (even in the summer!). By the way, this is Toronto whether I'm talking about. The car is an 89 SC. It doesn't idle until the thermostat is in its 12 o'clock position--"fully warm." I don't like letting the car warm up while driving either because the engine is really grabby (with all the RPMs going) not to mention the wear on the clutch if I have to start at 2000+ RPM. So I always have to wait. (I've gotten use to it, but passengers just don't understand. :) ) There are no mods on the car; everything is stock. I've flushed the coolant (about a year ago) but it didn't make the slightest bit of difference. Any suggestions would be welcome! It seems like *no one* has a clue to why the MR2 has to idle so high when it starts. I was thinking that the car maybe does it on purpose: thermostat's cold so it lets in more air to prevent the car from stalling at low RPMs (until it wams up an can operate smoothly at that range)? I guess if other MKI owners have this problem than it's the car's nature. I had this same problem on my MKI. It was the driver's side, too. I took the door panel off and found two little pads pressed against the glass. I guess these (soft) pads are supposed to keep the window from rattling because one of the pads' bolts were loose and tightening fixed the problem completely. The pads are on little brackets that bolt to the door. If you take the door panel off, you'll see two 1/2" bolts on the top edge of the door (right where the window slides into the door). If you loosen the bolts, you can adjust the position of the pads (closer or farther away from the window, depending on how tight you want it). You probably want to adjust the pads while the window is halfway down. It took me about two hours the first time, mostly because I have speakers in the doors and that caused me a bit of a headache. If you've got power windows you have to disconnect some more stuff, too. It really only takes about 10 minutes, and I figure your dealer will charge you about a half hour's labour to do it. The only thing the shop book forgot to mention about removing the door panel is that there is a littly screw (with a plastic cover) that has to come off. Then the panel easily snaps off. (Don't forget to take off the plastic pieces attached to the door like the door handle/lock. They have to come off first before the door snaps out.) I figure the driver side got loose first because opening and closing the door all the time loosened the bolts. Oh, you don't *have* to take the whole door panel off, it's just easier. At the Solo Trials at Stapleton, a person showed up in a white MR2 with the new style rear spoiler. I talked to the guy and he said that it was a 1995 model. From what I could tell, there was no difference between it and my 1994 (except for color), as was reported here some time ago. But, this is an existance proof of the 1995 production. marcus hall ------------------------------ From: "ROBERT C. SHAW" Date: Mon, 27 Nov 1995 16:05:18 -0600 (CST) Subject: window rattle If the window rattles in a MkI when 1/2 down try this. Take off the door panel - there are about 4 bolts on it, some of them under plastic covers. Disconnect the power windows/locks wire harness. After snapping out all the retainer clips, pull the panel straight up and out. Now look down the window from inside and above. There are two supports that push the glass against felt "bumpers". They maybe loose or need readjusting. Caution - make sure the window goes all the way up and down before completely reinstalling. There is a u-shaped metal pipe coming out from the front of the engine/transaxle at the very bottom. From the shape and position, I would guess that this might be some sort of fluid-cooler (similar to the small loop of piping many manufacturers place in the power-steering circuit to keep that fluid cool). This piping, however, emanates and returns directly into the base of the engine/transaxle. Can anyone say definitively what this piping is intended to do? Is it simply a place-holder, should one care to add a higher-capacity external radiator? Also, what is being cooled here: the motor-oil or the transmission/LS-differential gear-lube? thanks, Bob Enger ------------------------------ From: uunet!softy.softwords.bc.ca!geoff Date: Mon, 27 Nov 95 15:15:42 PST Subject: Re: Window rattle Bill Chen wrote: > Sometimes when my driver side window is rolled half way down and > I pass over bumps, I can hear the window sorta rattle. I was just wondering about the Eibach springs you are using presently. Are they the Progressive rate springs? or the Competition springs? I am supposing by your description of how they ride that they are not the progressives. I also have Tokico Illumina shocks. I am currently using the stock springs. I have ordered some TRD progressive street springs because of their year end sale, but I am trying to do some more research before I install them. If I find that they sit too low or ride too harsh, I would prefer to buy Eibach progressives as I have been told that they ride a little less harsh and also I like that they don't lower the car much. I would be a little concerned about using progressives on the front and linear springs on the rear. The car already tends toward oversteer and having the rear even stiffer and the front comparitively softer could cause an accident in an emergency situation. That's just my opinion, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you, Aly AbulKheir '85 MR2, Red with all options ------------------------------ End of mr2-digest V1 #44
