Being the owner of the most wildly modded Mk I on the digest, perhaps you could answer me this. Can 16x7 wheels and 205/45R-16s fit in a 85 NA Mk I without any problems or do we have to do something about the suspension. Good to see the news group is alive and well while Ive been away struggling through exams! Is everybody getting the digest form of the newsgroup now, I never asked for it but it seems the only form of emails I receive from the newsgroup now. Anyhow, I took the advice of some of the experienced people on the group and got a coolant flush for my 86 which was revving itself in the winters, back and forth until settling down at 900 revvs. However this problem still reoccurs periodically, on cold starts. Whats up with this? Also, I remember when I first got my HKS Superpowerflow, my girlfriends brothers (home mechanic types) warning me about rough starts in the winter because the filter might affect the choke. I have no problems with my starts, but the engine does seem to rev higher until warmed up, sometimes as high as 2400-2600 and then slowly settling down (no revving itself here). Im just wondering if I should expect this from the automatic choke adapting itself to the HKS?!? Thanks for any info, stay safe guys. ------------------------------ From: Bill Chen Date: Sat, 25 Nov 1995 11:09:07 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: mr2-digest V1 #42 Sometimes when my driver side window is rolled half way down and I pass over bumps, I can hear the window sorta rattle. Date: Sat, 25 Nov 95 18:45:00 EST Subject: HKS Turbo Timer installation Hi Geoff, I just installed an HKS turbo timer in my MR2T. Thanks for the detailed intructions, Geoff, they really helped. My unit really is a Turbo Timer III. It only has OFF, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 minute settings, and a one-digit LED display to show you what is set. It has no add mode to give engine hours. It is primitive compared to the Turbo Timer IV, but does all I really need it to, and it cost me half what a new TT IV w/harness would have. However, I do wish it had a 2 minute setting. I bought it from someone who bought it for his '91T and never installed it. It was new in the box and included the MR2 wiring harness. Installation took about 4 hours, partly because I did some stupid things while reassembling my interior. Brad Burns '94T black ------------------------------ From: "Burns, James B." Date: Sat, 25 Nov 95 17:47:00 EST Subject: Another data point on tires Wow, those original A022 tires are incredible! I had been running on Yoko AVS intermediates on aftermarket wheels, but put the original tires back on the stock wheels after I wore out my BFG R1 tires. I think the AVSi's are great, but the A022s are even better. Turn-in feels even crisper, even though they are only 195 width up front compared to the AVSi's 205. I've heard that the A022 was designed to preload the suspension to improve turn-in. I guess it works. The car also feels more neutral and predictable in high speed sweepers. If you look at the tread wear ratings, I guess you'd expect the A022 to have more grip since it has a TWR of 120 compared to the AVSi's 160. They are expensive, and I don't expect them to last long, but boy do they stick! It's too bad that they aren't made in a 205/50-15, but I think they come in a 205/55-15 which would probably work okay. Brad Burns '94T black ------------------------------ From: "Kostas G. D. It seems that when the springs contract too much, especially with the stock ones, which are rather soft and they can contract to max, you get those squicks. I had them too. Then I changed to TOKICOs and EISBACH (If spelled correctly) which are far too hard, in my opinion and gone is the noise. But the ride is now hard and at high speeds, regardless of the setting of the shocks, when over bumps the nose of the car lifts and the steering wheel shakes and you get the feeling you will be kicked off the road. So I am considering changing back to the 95 stock shocks with TOKICO springs which are linear rear and progressive front. I already have at hand a set of stock shocks and will order the springs asap. Re the modifications to convert to 95 stock (from 91) I find them rewarding. Both suspension and BRAKES the last being the most beneficial. I recommend to find a shop that has some experience with this type of car. More get a copy of the technical manual so that you can follow up the work done and provide info on the TORQUE requirement for tightening the various bolts and nuts...very important.
